Hi,

I've been looking for a gaming laptop for a while now, as i often play with my son and friends online, however with various games my current laptop has problems with (ie Samsung Galaxy book, just not designed for gaming, poor graphics, i5 proc etc..). The spec i have ordered is below, I am happy with it all, but am concerned if the hard drive I have ordered will be the right config (ordered as per my sons advice, teenager)

The first drive i chose was what i would see as my main drive for storage of games, files etc.. the 1TB , and he advised me on the second drive as the Intel NVMe for the OS to be installed on. Is this correct? as i notice the read / write speeds on these two are significantly different, and my concern is the 1TB drive as my first drive is much lower speeds than the one for the OS to be installed on, and am worried this will cause any performance problems. I hope i'm making sense here, i just don't want to have made an expensive mistake, and want to make sure its all correct. Also will the guys configuring my laptop know to install the OS onto the smaller of the drives?

I appreciate any advice :)
Thank you
Claire

Firstly the operating system will usually get out on the fastest smaller drive. It may have asked you during the checkout process.

Secondly could you copy and paste the entire spec and we may be able to give some advice / tweaks before it goes into full build.

Can I ask what it will be mainly used for? If it’s just gaming then 32gig RAM is a bit overkill and 16 (2x8) would be sufficient enough.

Is this at your max budget too?

Yes its only for gaming, it is really my max budget, i looked at the RTX 3070, 80, but the specs were coming out around 1600/1700 for similar

I was really more worried that the hard drives I ordered were incorrect, and was concerned re the difference in read / write speeds between the two, and if they would affect things much..

Its a good spec laptop - but dont want you overspending if you dont need to - what sort of games does he like playing - I will try to have a look then if he really needs 32gig RAM - would really only need this for MS Flight Simulator.

A 3060 would be really good for the resolution of the monitor anyway, the other two cards are if he was planning on using a monitor with a higher resolution / refresh rate.

Two immediate obvious changes are to remove Bullguard - this is known to cause some issues and is easier if its not on there to begin with (even though its a trial) - the Microsoft windows now comes with Defender which is just as good protection.

The other is to increase the warranty to Silver (I usually recommend Gold on laptops personally for the extra year on parts, but understand this is maximum budget), Silver is only a fiver but means that any returns in the first year has the collect and return paid for rather than just the first month.

To be honest, the M2 drive would be better off being the 512GB PCS PCIe than the Intel one - the reason being is that the Intel drives are not as durable (the number of times you can read and write from/to it) before it might fail and also the PCS one is slightly faster and a few quid cheaper.

Ideally the Samsung drives are the best, but obviously budget wise these are not possible.

Ahh thats good to hear. The laptop is actually for me, he has a decent spec PC already that he plays on, the laptop is a replacement for more of a pretty looking laptop with no substance for me :ROFLMAO:

I like old school stuff, but my laptop refuses to play Unreal Tournament , of which i wasn't very happy about, I also wouldn't mind trying a bit of Cyberpunk, and Watchdog Legions if it would be possible at all with this laptop?

Thank you, i'll see if i can amend these now :)

Both Cyberpunk and Watchdog Legions only require 16gig RAM on their highest specs:

and yes, they would run quite well on that laptop - cant say I have those games yet myself but I only have an RTX 2060 card in my laptop and AC: Valhalla runs nicely on it

consider a cooling pad to go underneath your laptop whenever you are using it - laptops, especially gaming ones, will naturally get hot/warm when running and this just helps keep it cooler

I use it ALL the time on my lap. It’s better for the laptop too if on your lap as gives extra space between laptop vents and your lap.

I will say though I’m a big chap
