I've been playing around with a few system setups, and now I've got a monitor, I figured I'd start this thread to get feedback on my thoughts. I've had laptops for a while, and this is my first desktop in about 15 years, and the first desktop with the main aim of gaming.

In terms of games, I will play just about anything, but I'm a huge fan of action-RPGs, with the likes of Cyberpunk 2077 and Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 probably being the two upcoming games I'm most hyped for. That being said, I also love strategy games and with more than 2,000 hours on Steam in Crusader Kings II, I'm looking forward to being able to play CKIII. I could potentially give Flight Simulator a go. but that's more curiosity than anything.

My monitor, the ASUS ROG Strix XG27UQ (a 4K 144Hz), has been pre-ordered and should be arriving next week. I'm leaning towards the 3080 over the 3070, but won't be ordering until I see what the Radeon 6000 & Ryzen 4000s are going to be like next month. Any thoughts/feedback would be much appreciated!

He said he'd been a long time lurker, didn't he? He's picked up all the tips and tricks  (y)

I have learned so much about PC builds through lurking. I'm just glad you never found out about the time I installed a 2080Ti in my old desktop with the 486 processor and 8Mb of RAM...

Joking aside, the plan is to now wait and see what AMD are doing with their next Ryzen and Radeon products, place the order in probably November and be in love with the new system by Christmas.

By November, the initial rush for 3080s will have more or less passed, and a few of the card variants will be out, so my build should have less of a wait than if I put the order in this evening.

Absolutely on all fronts. I think Ryzen 4000 is going to be well worth the wait, Radeon, I’m beginning to lose optimism judging by their cringey marketing press releases and announcements so far. Who knows though, they may well prove us all wrong, I do hope so.

Considering how badly Nvidia have ballsed up the global 3080 stock levels, I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the order, get my place in the queue and amend the chip to the 5900X when that releases.

Remember the chips are being announced on the 8th, they're not due for release until either 20th or 27th.

But yeah, it's probably going to be fine putting the order through now given the 3080 delays.

The 850 PSUs seem to be back in stock which is a plus for me.

If the chips release the 20th, that'll be great - the 27th could be cutting it a little fine if Nvidia have gotten their act together. Worst case scenario, I wait until Zen 4 for a chip haha!

what also maybe worth considering are new M.2 drives being released by different manufactures, not sure if and or when PCS will be stocking them but its just something to consider.

I would imagine PCS will get the new Samsungs in fairly quick as they're on general release already and also another alternative, perhaps the sabrent or Adata.

They're all pretty incredible drives.

Resurrecting my own thread because I've been approached by PCS and have been informed that the 5900X is out of stock and they have no idea when it'll be back in stock. Looking at the configurator, the 5800X seems to be in stock, so I'm wondering if that might be a better option to get things moving. @AgentCooper, @SpyderTracks any thoughts on the below build but with a 5800X?

It’d be a shame to drop the spec down but after the wait you’ve endured, I can see where you’re coming from. If you’re going to make the change, you can adjust the motherboard to the TUF X570 as the Strix won’t be required. Other than that, it’s still a peach of a system 👍

Since receiving the email from PCS, I've buried myself in benchmarks from all the usual techtubers and it doesn't seem like it'd be a particularly big hit in performance in the kinds of games I play. Will probably pull the trigger. Thanks for the motherboard advice - was just the kind of advice I was looking for. :)

5800x would certainly still be a strong CPU for gaming.

Got this response:

I can see that the change to the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X has come through successfully. There is also enough stock of the 10GB NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 3080 to cover your order, so we can now get on with building your computer. We will then need to test it to ensure that everything works correctly, and if all is well with this, we will be able to dispatch it on the following working day. Please keep an eye out for email updates from us, which will be sent when we build, test and dispatch your computer.
