Good 1440p Monitor

Hi guys,

So after just getting a 780 I've decided I need a new monitor which i'll probably buy at the end of the month. I was thinking of getting either a 1440p monitor or an ultrawide monitor, was thinking around the 24" size if 1440p or 32" if ultrawide, although that's flexible. The only thing I wouldn't want is a small ultrawide monitor since it makes it a bit pointless :p

Anyone got any suggestions on decent monitors? I don't want to spend too much, maybe a max of £350 or there abouts

There are two good 1440 monitors I have found through research as I prepare to get one myself. Obviously,
I do not have it yet, but I am looking at the following:-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...ue&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_2&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

You can get that on prime, 245 quid, 25 inch, Dell, decent, vesa, IPS, however 6 to 8 ms response, if you are gaming, no speakers either.

Or ...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...ue&ref_=ox_sc_sfl_title_3&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

Prime too, 273 quid, 25 inch, IPS, speakers, no vesa, 4 ms response, bit more of a gaming monitor, but in truth,
will you notice the difference? I think I am leaning towards the dell, which has 140+ reviews, mainly from
mac halfwits, saying how good it is. No speakers is good, as is vesa for me. 30 quid cheaper. But I haven't yet made my mind up complete.

If you find any 25 inch alternatives I would be interested in seeing them. 25inch is the max space I have available footprint
wise. There is a 27 inch version of the acer, probably the one to get, likewise the dell too, but the dpi go down I believe.

If you have an nvida gfx card, which as far as I recollect the 780 is, why get a monitor with freesync?

You may have a good reason, but, I may be wrong, wouldn't gsync make more sense?

Plus, it is a tn panel, which I am sure is great, my current monitor is a tn, but IPS is supposed to be better.

It's up to you though. Still think the Dell is perhaps the one for me.

i'm not too fussed about gsync, it's just a coincidence that the monitor has freesync. I've been looking at that monitor because of the resolution 144hz refresh rate. Since it'd be used for gaming the TN panel would be better due to the faster refresh rate which is harder and more expensive to get on IPS panels :p

Fair enough. If they did a 24 or 25 inch version I may be tempted, or a version with gsync anyway, as
I have a 970.

Yeah, shame it doesn't come with gsync, but still a good monitor without it for the price. 1440p 144hqz for £300 isn't bad

Amazon just had the Dell in at 213 on Prime so I had to get one at that price, 60 quid less than the Acer. I will post an update once it
arrives to see what it was like.

Right, had the Dell above now for several days now, had a bit of a play with it.

I can recommend it without question really. However I did get it for 213 pounds from Amazon,
They had just one in on warehouse deals as I said above, and at that price it was too good to miss.
It's gone up since then... :-o

The picture quality is excellent, going from a tn to an ips is a genuine step up in looks, and it has excellent viewing angles too
Which mean the consistency is there no matter where your eyes are physically.

No speakers which is fine for me, the vesa connection is fine and works well. Dell have provided drivers, and colour
Profiles, which work perfectly with w7 64 bit ultimate. Good onscreen menu's, it comes with a dp to mdp lead,
Which is what I am using. Superbly clear visuals on the desktop, even though text is smaller, it is more readable due to
It looking black, and a good day.

Gaming, no issues, I have set the response time to fast mode which is 6ms, absolutely fine,
No ghosting or lag. That is on skyrim and elite dangerous mainly.

Nvidia drivers worked perfectly first time with it, latest driver included, as you would expect.

My only criticism would be the on off and menu buttons, which are too feint on the bezel to
See easily and are not real buttons but touch the cover type affairs, but they work fine. The osd

Has some useful features, with about 7 different profiles to choose from, the usual things such as gaming and movie mode

A very good monitor overall, especially at that price.

I have an Acer XG270HU. Only problem for you is that its Freesync, but its 1440p and 144Hz and its awesome. 144Hz is the best investment I made for CSGO (better than all of those skins). 60Hz seems noticeably laggy in that game now. Afaik, you can still get the 144Hz on an Nvidia card but not as Freesync. It allows me to use 144Hz on an AMD card that isn't Freesync supported so I think its the same for Nvidia cards. You do need to use DP though.

Mine is a similar design to the second one you linked but slightly bigger and red tint instead of silver. I highly recommend it :)

Hey George,

I did a review of mine if you haven't seen it already

https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/foru...278Q-Monitor-My-Honest-Review&highlight=Swift

I found that the jump from 1080 to 1440 wasn't really that amazing, but the Gsync and the 144hz was. If i was going back i would probibily try to get the 1080p 144hz in my own opinion.

Hope this helps.

1440 was great for me. Double the pixels. I suppose it depends what you are doing. I like the extra space for more productivity, for gaming it doesn't bother me too much.

I can definitely recommend the acer above - I'm still awaiting my new PC with an AMD card for freesync, but even without this it is a beautiful monitor. Downsides are a rubbish stand with no vesa, and a TN panel (although the quality is fantastic), but 1440p and 144hz is a massive improvement.

If I wasn't using it for gaming I'd probably go for an IPS panel, but I have no issue recommending this as a high quality gaming monitor, even for nvidia cards - g-sync equivalents are approx £50-100 more. For my budget and needs this is perfect!

dont get me wrong there was an improvement, just it wasn't as impressive as i'd hoped. I still find 1080 a beautiful resolution.

Thes desktop realestate is a boost though
