I'd give even more criticism to the police - I mean, if they're worried about police time wasted, why did they go and waste their own time by investigating a non-issue? Given that it was done on the spur of the moment, it doesn't seem like it could have been a convincing scene... It's unclear if the police investigated in case it was genuine, or because they had to tell the people off.

The same situation could happen with any photo that people upload, and someone else decides to report - imagine people who are acting out a play (whether in private, or in public), and someone uploads the photo, which someone else sees out of context? You could easily have more convincing photos with preparation - if the police are fooled by a one-minute-gag, however will they cope with screenshots from CSI? Or if the need was to warn them, it's not clear why a quick gag like this is wrong, when there's nothing illegal to perform a play staging such an event.

Did Google apologise to the police for taking photos everywhere and broadcasting them worldwide in the first place?

The 'pranksters' seem like idiots to me. Why would you do that if you did not want someone to think it might be real? Because if it was meant to obviously be fake what is funny about a dead body lying on the road?

Hi, are you new to the Internetz?

It would be funny to show to your mates, that's why!

Maybe it would be funny among friends, but it was done on a platform that the whole world can see.
I can tell you as a fact that that I don't find it funny (no complaint about the thread). I would have found a regulation moon funny.

My girlfriend's gran was on street view for ages.

Only problem was, she was bent over gardening...facing away from the camera. Think that alone might have kept her grandad young for a good few years :D

While I do find Google maps extremely useful, in particular "street view" (I rarely drive anywhere new without checking out SV first), if Google want to drive around filming/photographing my street, then don't complain if you see something you don't like.

The next thing you'll be saying is I can't hang my 'smalls' on the washing line in my garden, in case someone takes offence.

I thought it was funny :/

I actually had a run in with google a while back, they appeared on the property I was managing one day taking pictures, not only were they on private property but to get there they had to travel a half mile long private road with tons of warning signs, I soon got rid of them and a few weeks later found that they had uploaded those images to street view. They very quickly removed them when I explained that the property was a very hush hush government facility and they were in breech of several acts of parliament by publishing those pictures.

It's not clear that the 'complaint' about the image of an apparently dead body was one of being offended.
If it was abundantly clear that the person in the image was not in terminal difficulty to all involved in the chain of events leading to the police being involved, then I don't know why the police would have bothered checking it out.
