After 8 working days of preproduction, the laptop was built, tested and despatched in one day. I could have received it on Friday but because of real life issues, I couldn't be at home. So it arrived today and I spent the entire day waiting to get home.
First thoughts: it's frikking huge! 17.3" widescreen is a lot bigger than I imagined. This is compounded by the fact that I had to resort to my NC10 netbook for the last four weeks when my 15" widescreen laptop went kaput.
The keyboard is going to take some getting used to. My previous laptop and my netbook have the usual keyboard. The vortex has gaps between each keys. The key travel feels shorter but more firm and more positive response (ie clicks better). There's also an additional numeric keypad which I'm not used to, as well as the shortened right shift key (keep hitting the up arrow instead!).
The screen resolution is awesome but I now feel that there's lots of wasted real estate. The new thread box takes up maybe a third of the width so there are huge white bars either side.
A few questions (not read the manual yet):
1. the laptop came with two screws in a packet. What are these for?
2. there's a plastic sheet that's kinda like a bookmark with felt strips on either side. What's this for?
3. The AC adaptor is huge. Ordinarily I'd keep this on the floor but the length of the cable from the adaptor box to the plugin cable (to the laptop) is very short. Is it possible to obtain some kind of extension?
More feedback once I get used to things.
