Hi guys,

Im almost ready to order my gaming laptop : Vortex 3 with nvidia gtx 675m

I really want a faster GPU; I had briefly considered the new AMD HD 7970m but just cant bring myself to trust AMD, call me a snob lol.

The obvious thing would be to wait for the new gtx 680m but Ive already put this purchase off so much, I really must have something fast now.

My question is : Can I upgrade to the gtx 680m later through PC Specialists, and roughly what would I expect to pay ?

Many thanks

Had AMD for the 4850, 5850 and currently the 6950. Never had a problem. Behind Intel AMD are the largest laptop graphics supplier from memory.

680M hasn't been released, dont think there is even a release date yet. But from what I have read the 7970M currently has the edge on performance.

Regarding the upgrade it is extremely expensive and also depends on BIOS support and drivers for the Vortex3 as I understand it. You are better off waiting if you want the 680M but probably July at the earliest.

ATI were making graphics cards before Nvidia had even been thought of... I'm afraid your snobbery is costing you in the performance vs price department.

You can upgrade to the 680M from the 675M. It is estimated that the 680M will be here by September.

Sorry, does that mean pcs WILL offer an upgrade service to the 680M? And if so, how would that work? Would we get a discount for trading in our 675M and having recently bought from you, or would it be a case of having to buy the card at full price, cover shipping and pay for the service etc?

I only ask because I too am just about to order a laptop from you. I was going to go for the AMD 7970M, but with all the delays, no ETA, and the fact I need the laptop now, I may have to accept the 675M... but in which case, it would be nice to be able to upgrade later?

Im glad you elaborated alebea. Thats pretty much what I wa getting at :)

I know its hard to quote a price atm but any rough estimate etc would be really helpful.

Often the cost of a mobile GPU is so near to the cost of a new laptop that it is simply not worth it. You are going for the GTX 675M which isn't much faster than my year old+ GTX 485M equipped laptop when you could go for a 7970M which is around 50%+ faster and cooler. The GTX 680M will cost about £180 more than the 7970M for a measly 10% extra performance. Nvidia say it will be 30% faster but I wouldn't trust their stats, as far as you could throw the kidney you would need to sell to afford their GPU.

There was a previous thread with a similar query, indicating that PCS does not offer an exchange service for used components
