GTX670 Temps.

Hello all,

Been playing around on all kinds of games on my new PC, just want to check if these temps are good.

Across all games (maxed out), my GPU always reaches the temperature of 76-79c and sits there with fans running at about 55%. Looking at other people's temps (quick google search) they seem to be lower at the 60-70c region, are my temps normal running on load with stock fans and stock clock speeds? My idle is 30-40c.

Thanks

Edit after receiving help

Temperatures now:

Seems that the card didn't want the fans go to go higher at stock because of the noise increase, as Tom said this is probably Nvidia who decide to have it like this for noise convenience.

If anyone reading this in the future seems to have high temps also, go through the suggestions in the thread. Just be prepared for louder fans when playing modern games!

Big thanks to Wozza and Tom :)

They are a tad high yes, you could turn up your case fans speeds or maybe create a custom fan curve although that would require 3rd party software to do it

Sorry to high-jack the thread, but what software is it you use to get the temp details?

He's using GPU_Z - http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/

+1 I agree with wozza, :)

You could use the palit software that comes with your drivers to increase the gpu fan speed. it's called thundermaster or something like this, Or use MSI afterburner to do the same thing, (just dont play with the overclock bits) I think Evga has software too.

But just so you know, although those temps are high, it wont damage the card. I've had my top 580 to 99c before, (left the fans at 40% whilst gaming by accident) when it got to about 95 it suddenly ramped up. Also the card people make the cards so it can run hotter, as many people dont like noise, so I guess nvida and ATi would make the card so its quieter and hotter rather than cooler and louder. IF that makes any sense.

I tend to set my fans (both 580's) to atleast 70% fan speed when gaming, that's game dependent, some games need to go to 100% like shogun 2 or metro 2033, But bf3 to either 70% or 85%. Noise does get on my nerves though, but one card at about 80% shouldnt be too bad.

Edit, Tom beat me to it!

Wozza: My case is pretty big and has a lot of air flow, do you know why the temps seem to be higher than usual by default? I assume in QC at PCS they ran tests without using any addition software, so am I doing something wrong with the PC do you think? This is how it's setup:

Tom: What kind of temps are you getting there? It did seem a bit weird for me to see the fans not going higher when the temp went up so much.

nice setup mate :)

you could add a case fan to the bottom of the case, so it blows air under the 670, that may help a little.

I put the fans to 75% in MSI Afterburner and got this:

The noise went up instantly, but it's something I can get used to I think. I'm only playing WoW at max settings right now which is what got the previous temps. BF3 temps both on and offline are roughly the same, sometimes a little less than WoW.

You could try setting up a fan curve using a piece of software, here is my fan curve which is set up using EVGA Precision X

This saves you adjusting it everytime you want to play a game

Just got it set up similar to yours, of course I'll need to test a lot of games now, which I think I have no problem with!

The temps are a lot better now, never going above 70c. Made an edit to original post for an update.

Also, will this curve work when I have 'auto' set on or off?

I was getting temps of 77-80 consistently across all games, and it seemed like a waste to me to have these high temps when I have so much cooling in the case + the fans only running 55% max. But as you said, it is normal to be 70c +. Don't take this as a valued opinion though, I'm new to high end PC's in general.

Also I maybe running SLI with another 670 soon, so the more I can learn about component cooling the better :)
