'Hard' mousemat?

Hi guys, my current setup is pretty terrible. Pc is hooked up to LCD tv on wall. I sit on my big comfy sofa-like chair with my keyboard on my knee and my mouse mat next to me. I don't actually have any old mouse mats lying around other than a freebie I got at work which is quite frankly terrible. It's flimsy, it makes a terrible noise when moving the mouse and it's just pure horrible.

Anyway, now that I've had my rig for a couple of weeks I've come across a few minor problems that have unsettled me. Firstly, I've found that quite a few games really don't suit the mouse and keyboard or I just haven't been able to get used to them yet. I've found Skyrim to be difficult with keyboard and mouse and my mouse seems to enjoy releasing drawn arrows for no reason and I've also found lockpicking to be a bit of a pain using 'W' (unless there's a key that slow down the speed it turns the lock that I don't know about like the walking key?). Plus the whole UI experience doesn't seem to suit a m + k at all and I haven't got round to downloading mods to fix this yet so basically I think I'm going to be buying a wired xbox controller for £20 from Amazon. Does anybody have any idea on the wire length and whether it's a good investment? I'm sure it'll be fine but just want to be safe. Or can anyone recommend the wireless adaptors instead of a wired controller? I have like 8 xbox controllers at home so it does seem silly buying a new one when I can just get an adaptor but I do like the idea of not having to worry about batteries, etc. It does seem silly as I've moved from xbox to pc but I just feel some games were meant to be played with a joypad.

And then back to my original point, I need a decent mousemat but it needs to be like a hardback book. I'm not too bothered about the size as it only needs to be small (the one I'm using must be like w 15cm x h 10cm and is pretty perfect size wise) but it does need to be hard. I've been putting my current mat on top of a hardback book but it keeps slipping off but when I put it directly on the chair it's too soft and flimsy. I've been looking at the steel series on amazon but I've read they come rolled up in a tube which suggests to me that they're not as sturdy as I'm looking for.

My budget for the mousemat is £5-£15. I can go over but seeing as my keyboard and mouse set only cost 22 quid I'd rather not spend too much on this area!

Cheers guys.

The xbox controller cable is 3m I think. I too am finding that I am using the controller for a fair few games, it seems lots of games are simply better optimised for consoles/controllers. Which is a shame really.

You could get something like this for a mousemat : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Razer-Sphex-Gaming-Mouse-Mat/dp/B002GQSIWI

But to be honest there are loads of hard mats to choose, you could also just put your current mouse mat onto a book (its what I did for a while with my old PC)

Cheers Steaky, that mousemat looks great! It's out of stock but I should be able to find an alternative from that link. I've been putting my current one on my bosses Deus Ex Hardback walkthrough up till now and I've realised for one, I should probably give it him back and for two, my current mousemat isn't grippy in the slightest so it won't stay on it anyway.

And it is a shame about the controllers >< I've got bf3 downloading at home as we speak and I'm really hoping I'll enjoy using the m+k but I get the feeling I'd prefer using the controller and just taking advantage of the bigger servers on pc compared to xbox. Especially because my mouse and keyboard were so cheap so aren't really optimised for gaming.

I'm not definitely settled on the hard mousemat, I just figured it would be easier than putting it on a book! Would you recommend the Steel Series then? On one of the customer pictures it looks almost like it's a flimsy bit of cloth (which I assume wouldn't matter if you were playing on a desk). If I stick it on like a book with some text sticking out of the cover is it going to pick up those bumps? The only smooth hardback I've got is my bosses :L

Steelseries is a wee belter. You're right it is foldable (comes wrapped up like a cloth) but i use a similar setup to yourself when i'm web browsing and just stick it on an uni/poker book and i have literally no worries. The bottom side has a "grippy" material and sticks solid on my desk if i want it to, but can easily be repositioned as often as I like. That said it is thin (couple of MM at most) so if you're struggling to find a flat book then that may be an issue. How about your welcome pack from PCS?

iv got a Corsair Vengeance MM400 and im using a R.A.T 7 on it my "desk" is the end of my bed (had to move in with my GF's mum dont ask -.-). This mousemat is perfect for this alternative as its solid, quite large (352mm x 272mm) and is smooth enough to get you some nice co-ordination.

Hi Brad, that sounds pretty spot on for what I need, do you know if they do it in smaller sizes?

Also just going back to the controller, does anyone know if using a wireless adaptor will interfer with my computers wireless signal or whether I should just get wired? I'd like wired but I already have wireless controllers and I could do without too many wires across the room due to a certain kitten.

By wireless adaptor, do you mean the Xbox wireless controller? I don't think it interferes with your wireless signal and I have never had a problem using it.

Yea that's what I meant :) I didn't think I should have a problem but I read on a review that someone had it close to their computer and it was majorly dropping down the connection speed :| Also found out the amazon receiver is apparently a chinese fake for £20 so gone for a £7 one from a top rated ebay seller with free delivery. Worth a punt.

I have a wireless dongle and a wireless adapter for my PC and neither interfere with each other - completely different signals :)

I decided to go for the mini SteelSeries mat for about £7. It's only a little one but for now that's all I need to be honest and for that price I can't really go wrong compared to my freebie 'non-slip flooring' promotion mat. May look at getting a bigger one if I upgrade my mouse can see it being fine for now, especially if my xbox controller adapter works well.

As long as it is being sold as an official one you should not have any major issues, although I'm sure others will disagree lol.

Well the only one on Amazon was full of reviews saying it was a china fake with fake stamps on the box and stuff and then I went on ebay and they had quite a few plain ones and then one with 'Xbox 360' written on the actual adapter so I figured I'd give it a shot as it was considerably cheaper than amazon. The main issue I've read about is getting the drivers to work but that should be fine. I don't mind the keyboard and mouse, I just feel like it misses out on some games as you can't 'gradually' press anything. It's either not pressing a key, or fully pressing it x) The lack of triggers and joysticks are quite noticable.

Sorry to hear your discomfort with Mouse & Keyboard and I guess it is something you have to get used to when coming from console gaming, all of my real life friends struggle to use a mouse and keyboard and even say things like "but theres more buttons on a joypad I just dont understand how to use this!" which is quite clearly not true and is down to the introduction of something alien. As for your randomly shooting arrows, are you by any chance picking up your mouse to move it back to the middle of the mouse mat sometimes?

The only time I personally prefer a controller on PC is for racing games, to which I use my PlayStation 3 controller hooked up to think its a 360 control, but then I've been playing PC games for the past 14 or so years.

Well I've been playing bf3 for the first time tonight and I'm actually enjoying my m+k setup. It took a little bit of getting used to but I tried a close quarters map for a couple of hours and I think I may have grasped it. I think I would prefer to use a controller for things like dishonoured though which don't really require much speed or agility as it's quite laid back compared to bf3. I suppose it's just getting used to it.

As for my skyrim arrows, I don't think I am, I came to the conclusion that because my mouse is cheap it might be slightly unclicking while I hold it down but maybe it's just me being twitchy >< Do you know if there's any way to slowly pick locks? I like the fact I can use space to walk and creep slowly so it would be nice if I could slowly rotate the locks to make sure I've got it alligned properly... Otherwise this stealthy archer character is gonna fail x)

Not played Skyrim in a while but I thought you used the mouse to pick the lock? Can't remember having any problems trying to do it so cant help you there, sorry.
