Have I gone overboard in this spec. Some video/photo editing but mainly office.

Hi everyone

I have come up with the spec below and just wondered if anyone had any comments.

Budget around £700 but will go higher if there is a good case for it ie extra future proofing or great improvement in speed for small extra outlay.

Main uses currently: office applications, web (usually 15 to 20 tabs open), email, instant messenger some photo editing, all open simultaneously. Spread across 2 x 22inch monitors.

Future uses include more photo editing and hopefully some video and possibly some gaming, hence 8gb memory below.

I currently have an external 500gb hard drive I use to back up data, would an extra internal hard drive and raid be a good idea. I also like that I can take the external drive with me when I go away for added data security which obviously is not possible with raid and an internal drive.


Anything I've missed ?

That's a pretty solid spec which you've put together with not much room for improvement without dramatically increasing the budget. The only thinkg I'd mention is to consider getting an nVidia Graphics Card because they have CUDA Cores which is known to improve photo/video editing performance. The nVidia equivalent of the HD5770 is the GTS450.

Thanks for looking over this and for the tips on the graphic card. Any advice/comment regarding extra hard drive and Raid. In terms of data security I feel my current external hard drive and backups is adequate but would appreciate any comment on this.

I should add I have never experienced data loss so may be a little complacent about it.
