HDD not detected

Hi Guys

Wondering if anybody has had problems with the ASUS P8P67 or similiar motherboard.

The problem: When I went into BIOS to switch from high performance mode to 'normal' mode then saved to restart and log on to windows a message displayed 'Adaptor 1 not found' no HDD detected and 'Marville' was worded up the top with a serial number I dont recall. I did some research on the internet and found that sometimes Windows gets tempermental when changes happen it cant be bothered to agree with 'at random'.

Anyway I called PCS and the Tech guy thought it might be the HDD that had gone or the motherboard after a series of tests. So I requested a RMA.

Apparently this is happening to alot of ASUS motherboards - though the majority of them have no immediate problems and are of good quality.

It actually happened to me the first day I changed from HDD to SSD and installed windows and restarted. After updating the BIOS to V3202(ASUS P8Z68-V Pro/Gen3) and disabling Marvel Storage and JMB Storage Controller and then starting the computer it worked fine and has done since. I have also since diverted to default BIOS many times which re enables the Marvel and JMB controllers and still had no problems after doing this the first time.

I am sure PCS will spot the issue immediately lol. Oh my BIOS is very old like the 3rd one ASUS came out with 1501 or something - I have been scared to update the BIOS as of late due to 'scare stories' on internet. I wonder if PCS will update the BIOS for me. I just wish I could of sorted the problem but tried everything - was gonna deep scrub the motherboard in a washing up bowl but thought id call PCS.

Also had problems in the past with graphics card but I wiggled it around for the system to detect it - though ASUS motherboards are made by children in sweat shops back east I am worried!

Which revision of that motherboard is it? As you might remember, these had issues with the SATA ports failing over time. If the hdd is in the wrong (one of the failing) sata port and it is one of those boards, then it could be this that is the issue. When this issue first arose I had just ordered and was waiting to receive my pc. It didnt affect me so much so i thought, but a few weeks ago the DVD drive started having errors, I reinstalled, and tried different burners etc. and then got an rma dvd drive from pcs as the final straw. The problem still remained. I thought it might have been a bad batch of drives so went and dug out another one. Fitted it, and the problem was still there! Not often DVD drives fail so quickly with so little use so I thought something else must be wrong.

Agh....was stuck with an issue with the power supply or the motherboard. Would get i/o errors from using the drive, strangely reading discs wasnt a problem at first, just burning them. Later reading them would become an issue too. Tried the other sata port at the bottom of the motherboard and a different sata cable/powersupply cable, and the problem was still there.

Eventually I had run out of options and had forgotten completely about the cougar point chipset issue. I then started to wonder and changed the hdd to the quicker 6 mb/s sata port (that my hard drive was plugged into) and the problem stopped instantly, the SATA ports had suffered the dreaded failure. I have one hdd and one dvd drive plugged in. The pc is out of warranty and as it now works fine (and if i need to plug anythign else in I can use external) I didnt worry too much but it was annoying. So if you have the first revision of this board I would say its a "when" and not an "if" they go. You may not be affected as the hdd should be plugged into the correct port due to this issue, but so should my dvd drive have been! It is just the lower ports on the motherboard that are affected (the 3gb per second ones) so if you have more than a few things plugged in it could be this.

If it is a later revision, then i have only heard good things mainly about the board, and mine has been great and still is great apart from this issue. Good luck! Of course if it is not this it could be a failed motherboard in another way etc.

Thankyou for taking the time to share your experience with me. The board is B3 revision. My guess the board is faulty as my graphics card wasn't detected at one point until I wiggled it around even though it was perfectly set into the slot.

Note that the problem Nilsatis is talking about is a problem that occured with some of the new SandyBridge motherboards in Jan/Feb last year and anyone who had ordered or already had one of the faulty boards should have been contacted and offered a solution to the problem (either the revised edition of the board - I think the revised version is the B3 one - or a card for SATA ports I believe)

So it's unlikely that it is the same problem you're getting Louis.
