Help! Frozen in black screen...

Please help! I have had my new PCS desktop computer (360240) for over two weeks now and it has been working brilliantly, I have used it successfully for many hours - until now!

Earlier today I installed System Mechanic, which I have had for 5 years on my old machine (the same copy). At first I got a couple of Runtime Error messages, and it would not load, until I put a shortcut on my desktop and it loaded correctly from that, and I did several scans. This program needs to reboot to save changes.

Anyhow when I started up again, it appeared to reboot but then a message said that the system had not shut down properly the last time, and gave options to recover (Safe Mode, with Network, Start Normally etc) I chose the latter and the Windows Start-up screen appeared, then...nothing! A black screen from which nothing at all worked (but the cursor was movable). The only way to get out of it was to shut the power off.

I then tried Safe Mode, and Safe Mode with Command, but in those modes I just got to "Loading Windows Files" then to black screen immediately, not even to Windows Start-up. I can't do anything, of course not even to the internet to find a fix. I am writing this on my laptop.

As everything is new, it can't surely need any upgrades, and as I have said, everything was fine until this problem. Of course it could just be a coincidence as regards System Mechanic but that's the only change I've made. As I can't get into the computer I can't uninstall the program or do a System Restore or anything!

I just hope that some of your experts can suggest a solution! I have searched the Microsoft help pages on this laptop without finding one. Thanks in advance.

Try the start up repair option from your os disc.

Thanks, I tried putting the disc in, but of course since the screen remains blank, nothing shows up. And I have tried another monitor and that is exactly the same. Any more ideas?

You have to restart computer with disc in,if you cant get to a boot option on start up you will have to set dvd drive to first boot option in the bios.
Sorry im assuming you know how to do this, first try tapping f8 on startup,as soon as you see option come up,you might miss it,just try again.

Done that, as you said, this time got to screen saying press any key to boot from DVD drive. Pressed Enter. Got to the Starting Windows screeen, then nothing, black again. This is driving me nuts!

Just noticed in the BOOT DEVICE PRIORITY that all the devices listed are disabled, how do you enable the one you want?

Put the disc in,shut down pc completely even if you have to do it at socket then try again, failing that i can only suggest you change boot order in bios.

Got it! This time a screen came up with a System Restore option, I think this has fixed it. Thank you very much, for taking the trouble to help me, much appreciated!

You are quite right, I won't be using System Mechanic again in a hurry. Almost certainly that was the problem. But it was such a useful program. Can get the latest version for $20 or I might search for a free equivalent.
