Help! Laptop sounds an alarm before crashing and shutting down

Hi All,

Can anybody help?

I have had my laptop a little over a year and it has recently become unusable.

A few days ago I heard what can only be described as a crackling sound coming from the rear left of the machine - not good! It lasted a couple of seconds but afterwards I couldn't notice any performance problems - which just made me nervous.

I don't use it every day but I turned it back on at the weekend and after a short period of basic use (browsing steam games) an alam started sounding with a clear beep every second or so.

I shut down.

Now every time I turn it on I get a single beep as the pic specialist logo appears on the screen, after which it appears to boot up fine. A minute or so later the alarm returns and shortly after that it turns itself off.

Any ideas?

I haven't had any other issues in the last year, other than ( and I don't know if this is relevant) 3-4 months ago when my young daughter lent on the usb mouse cable almost directly on the socket. The white plastic bar (I don't know if it has a proper name) in the middle of the socket snapped but there was no other obvious damage as a result.

The usb socket was also rear left of the machine but this could just be coincidence.

Thanks in advance for any help

Ben

As far as the USB socket goes just make sure that the contacts inside the socket are not touching each other and they're not touching anything else either. As long as they're hanging in free space they should not cause a problem (unless something broke inside of course).

It would also help to know your temperatures, download HWMonitor (the free one, not Pro) from http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html and post your temperatures when the alarm goes off.
