I'm currently waiting on a new laptop from PCS (as below) but lurked the forums beforehand. Thought I'd actually introduce myself! Hi all.

Been gaming since a Sinclair Spectrum 48k. From there to Amiga 500, then to PC once I saw Doom 2 and Mechwarrior 2. Brief dalliance into PS2; the console, not the keyboard. My first PC was a hire purchase P120, 16Mb RAM (no GPU), which cost me a laughable £1700, paid for with my paper round (via my dear old dad). Current rig is a 1070Ti, i5 8400, 16Gb RAM, Hannspree HG 324 QJB screen. Happy enough with that setup for the moment - it's not killer, but it lets me max pretty much everything, RDR2 and MSFS notwithstanding. I've also got an Oculus Rift S, which works very well with that.

I'm a merchant navy engineer, so spend half my life at sea. As a gamer, I need as much entertainment as I can get while away. I bought a PCS spec in 2014, and it's done me proud, but it's time to upgrade. I'm happy with the below build:

Welcome to the forum. My grandfather was in the merchant navy in WW2 and several of my uncles and cousins were also at sea. I haven’t done that myself, but have had several sessions of offshore survival training at the Warsash merchant navy training centre, including being dangled beneath a helicopter in a transfer between a lifeboat and a Zodiac.

Aye, I'm deep sea, three months on, three off. Though covid has kinda ruined that. Still, I need a good gaming laptop with a load of storage!

Both grandfathers were at sea, one RN who was on the HMS Dorsetshire when they sunk the Bismarck (then got sunk later off Sri Lanka), the other was Merch running North Atlantic grain convoys.

Yacht work can be very lucrative. It's a massive shame we don't really have a merchant fleet anymore. An island nation which is comparatively rich should be at least making ships. Certainly we should be using shipping to cart stuff around rather than clogging the roads.

My grandad was on a hospital ship that was sunk in WW2. He was then a private chef on some yachts for a while before coming ashore. When my grandparents went on holiday and to visit 2 of their children to Australia in retirement, they went by ship - a Russian merchant ship that took a few tourists.

At the age of 10, I was let loose on the helm of a ferry crossing the Irish Sea for all of 30 seconds or so as thanks for going round with a charity bucket collecting money during the crossing. That's about the extent of my maritime experience.

There are still some container ships that take passengers, though it's getting rarer.
