High pitched noise

Hey guys

So just got a new pc from pcspecialist yesterday but I'm getting a high pitched noise coming from it.

Can't quite work out where it's coming from pretty sure it's not the graphics card fan rho

It's hard to record it but I've tried with the video I've attached below

The best way I can describe it as is a high frequency noise that has like little gaps in it like morse code it's not constant and it can be heard at idle

I can't hear any spurious noises on that video, but am not surprised the fan noise gets loud when you get the camera that close. I don't know what speed that fan is running at, but I'd have thought it would be in a slow, almost-silent mode whilst the PC is idling...but then you've change to a hotter CPU...so all bets are off.

What happened to the 7800x3D / 7900 build you were going to get?

You seem to have gone for a slower, older, hotter CPU and really slow RAM.

You may need to tweak the fan curves (for the Corsair AIO) in iCUE, but the profile for the Hyte fans at the back/bottom may need to be controlled by the motherboard software / BIOS settings.

The only part of the AIO that makes any noise on mine at idle (admittedly with a slightly cooler 5800X CPU) is the pump which runs continuously...but I can't even hear that over the fan in my HDD enclosure on my other machine.

Yeah its really hard to record it's almost like a high frequency noise that comes and goes of you are in the room you can hear it but video seems really hard to pick it up

It's not the DDR5 I'm worried about, it's the very low speed of the DDR5 that's concerning. It's about the lowest that's available and will mean your system will not be operating to it's best.

I also don't know why PCS recommended an outdated CPU either...and a hot i9 one at that which performs no better than the cheaper i7. They've also given you a much slower boot SSD, and secondary SSD. The only reason I can think of for these changes was in an effort to reduce the price a little...so I'm confused.

I put my headphones on and couldn't hear any 'noise' until you focused on the fan...and then I just heard normal fan noise.

Maybe someone younger, with better hearing can hear something?

Yeah its really hard to record it just like a high frequency noise that comes and goes is the best way to describe it

The only other things I can think of are general sources of noise:
  • coil whine from GPU electronics (but usually when under load)
  • something touching a fan slightly
  • electronic noises from PSU (but again, usually when under load)
  • vibration causing something to touch now & then
  • loose connection to an electronic part causing either a slight rattle (so turn it off and reseat the components you can get to easily - RAM, GPU

Yeah pcspecialist said give it a couple of days and see if it calms down if not try again to record it and we will go from there

Don't feel comfortable messing around inside the case

Yeah I said I could afford around 1,800 and I needed it to be able to

Play and record 1440p 60fps
Edit 1440p videos

So I assume they have tried to keep the cost low whilst trying to get a pc for what I need

Frankly they picked very badly, you can do a hell of a lot better with 1,800. A 2 generations old CPU and RAM so slow it's basically DDR4 are not good calls at all then putting a Samsung Evo 970 for some reason when it's also 2 generations behind and fairly slow but still more expensive than other storage M.2 in it's speed range

It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to be honest, PCS guys you speak to generally are either tech support or salesmen. You can get lucky and find someone who knows what they are talking about help spec a machine for you or you can get a salesmen who knows just about as much as you and recommends things because they sound good. I wouldn't have recommend buying this machine from the jump though, I'd honestly send it back for a refund and go for a custom build, you can get much more for your money mate

Unfortunately, it’s just not a good build, it’s really poorly optimised.

The i9 is completely pointless for your uses, i7 would have given the same performance but AMD would have given far more for less cost. It’s also old gen so you’re missing out on about 20% available performance going with 13th gen.

The slow RAM is going to bottleneck a further 10% so V again, there was no point going even for the i7, as you’re only getting i5 performance.

The case as well hasn’t got the best airflow and I think you’ll find the gpu will thermal throttle as a result.

The PSU is too low and can’t support upgrades.

It’s just a really poorly designed build, if PCS really suggested that I’d be very surprised

I have used it and can't have a refind tho sadly

They said the noise I'm hearing is most likely coil wine and to keep a eye on it and if anything else happens they will look into it

I can always upgrade the ram at a later date which at least with them they do it right ?

I sent them that earlier build we discussed and they suggested this so guess I'm stuck now as I've used it so unless there is a major issue I can't refund it

See I don't know now been 5 weeks dealing with another company which took ages

Now I still have no clue what to go with if I returned it and second guessing myself

That’s not correct, you can return anytime up to 14 days after receipt weather you’ve used it or not
