Homeplugs

Heya

I ordered my pc with a wifi card but I'm also thinking of getting homeplugs after seeing a lot of glowing reviews, so my questions are:

a) do they work with virgin media (anyone have experience of this?)
b) How do I set them up.. do I simply need an ethernet cable from the router into the homeplug then another one from the plug upstairs into my pc?
c) are they reliable?
d) do they need installing or does it just act like I plugged my pc into an ethernet port in the wall?
e) will they work in the old house with 60s wiring I'm renting at the moment?

Thankyou!

Sarah :)

a) yes
b) yes
c) yes
d) good to go unless you want it encrypted
e) all of the above completely depends on the state of the wiring which you will not know until you plug them in!

You can use them with extensions which dont have surge protection etc but the more links in the chain the weaker the signal and the more likely it is to be a bit pants.

Also it can depend on the size of the cable on the extension & especially the length of the cable, shorter the better & your house wiring would need to be in a pretty sorry state for the homeplugs not to work.

I installed mine yesterday

a) I have 30mb Virgin media
b) they come with ethernet cables
c) too early to tell but didnt drop out yesterday
d) you literally just plug them into the wall, press a button on each of them and they are ready
e) my house is about 100 years old but no idea when the wiring was done, cant have been recent though.

Tested the speed yesterday: 31.56mb. So yes, highly recommended.

Thanks, the ones you have which came with cables, were they from here? I might call up and get some added to my order.
