It should last until a new application or game that you want comes out and your system can't handle it,requiring an upgrade or if this isn't possible a new machine.
When this could happen is any ones guess I suppose.

I doubt that anyone can seriously tell you whether it will still be good in a few years time. Nobody has that kind of crystal ball and the technology is advancing more rapidly than ever. That's where PCS score, you have the capacity on that laptop to upgrade the CPU, RAM and hard disk. You even have a second hard disk bay. At the price you'll be paying I'd have thought you're about as future-proof as it's possible to get.

well, depending on what you want to do with the lappy - Crysis 3 is already out there and will easily bring the gtx660m to it's knees. Even 680M and 7970M will struggle to get ~60FPS on med/high from what I've read.

Your laptop is only up to date when you buy it. From then on it will always run the software you run now in the same way but technically it can never compete with the next best thing to come along. At some point a decision has to be made, to buy one now or keep waiting .... and waiting ...... and ....

In 3 months time the Intel 4000 series Haswell processor will be available. That will be more energy efficient and have 10% more power and an integrated GPU up to twice as good. The downside is that the cost of being an early adopter is likely to be high. I believe I am also right in saying that the processor will be soldered to the motherboard and hence the whole assembly would need to be changed if upgrading. Of course if you want to wait a couple of years there is always Skylake.

About 15 years ago I was contracting and travelling around so needed a laptop (well, it had Windows 98). It was top spec for its time but within 6 years the advances in programs and technology had made it like so much scrap. Today that situation hardly applies, in fact the trend is towards more energy efficient processors for small laptops and pads. The average consumer still buys 2 core computers from PC World or wherever while anyone with more demanding work buys accordingly. Only if you are a gamer need you keep upgrading to play the latest games as apparently these tend to take advantage of the latest hardware.

So what about me, I hear you ask. My desktop was rebuilt 3 years ago but is still adequate for the task (mainly video editing) but I need to be a bit more mobile so am buying a laptop now. In theory it has twice the power of the desktop so should be adequate for some time to come. On the other hand, I am 74 years old and the laptop may well outlive me. So I don't care.

Hi All,

I was thinking about using the above spec'd Optimus 17.3" with 12 GB of RAM instead. At £849, do you think this will whip the pants of a Samsung Series 5 I was looking at previously that is about the same price?

Thanks,
