i5-3550 or i7-3770 - worth the £70 upgrade?

Hi all,

Wanting a general gaming PC which I can use for 4-5 years with no upgrades, but also want a music composition PC which needs some decent power for loading VSTs etc.

Now - is the i5-3550 something which could last the distance, or is it genuinely worth the extra £70 for an i7?

The i5 is a cracking processor for the money, it really is. However anything your looking to last for 4-5 years without upgrading means you tend to have to buy the best currently available to hold any hope of sticking with the ever growing demand for faster components from the software of tomorrow.

If i were you i would get the i7, that way you know you have the best available processor. I think back 5 years to the PC i had then, it had a very solid mid range processor in it, i did some benchmarks before i upgraded to my current machine. It was totaly outclassed as you would expect, in 5 years time i expect it to be no different.

Uh-oh - you've made me upgrade my i5 to an i7 processor too now! :whistling: I'm after a long term, last at least 5-6 years too.

LOL

Ooops - now I've upgraded my HDD and added 2 HDMI leads onto my order - I'm not going to look at these forums anymore! ;)

Heh, i take no responsability for your inability to resist the lure of the teach.

"Go on! Just upgrade one last thing. Perhaps a GTX 680. You know you want to! Oh yeah!"

Those upgraded voices are a killer, if they suggest upgrading to a 680, just ignore them it's not worth it. "Or is it, yeah go on just do it!"

If ya using IIyama monitors, you dont need HDMI's leads as they come with dvi cables, although if ya using the speakers on the IIyama monitors, you will still need the HDMI leads.

Ooooh, thank you for the tip but I think I will occassionally use the speakers so might as well get them, just in case. Also I can't wait for my 'puter any longer than I have to, so have my mind firmly decided on the GTX 670 which I believe to be in stock thankyouverymuchly! :tt2:

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread MaltonSeaDog.

Almost all monitors with speakers are supplied with an audio lead to use with the dvi cable,
