I5 8600 vs i7 8700

Is there much difference between an i5 8600 and an i7 8700? If paired with a 1070/1080?

Was planning a laptop but after issues with heat on the defiance V, I'm looking at a smallish pc case I can use instead.

What's the budget for the system (and does this need to include monitor, OS, anything like that?)

For non-gaming uses there could be very significant differences ofc.

Well I'm reduced to gaming in the dining room at the moment hence my current laptop. So a laptop alterative is a pc I can sit in the corner of the room. I'd need a monitor, ideally with its own USB hub I could connect keyboard and headset to (headset has a long cord so not as essential as connecting a keyboard to it.

I'm still undecided so spec'ing up options. Probably only go to 24 inch monitor as I'd be moving it from sitting on top of the desktop unit to table at the moment. Kids are both in their beds when I game so can't go in the other bedrooms as I'd wake them up lol.

Budget wise I guess 1500 to 1600. So I've actually been building specs based on a 1070, 16gb ram and a 512 nvme ssd.

Is a rough idea. Laptop wise I'd have to go for optimus IV with 1060 as a 17 inch laptop that's a 1070 has to be an octane as I had heat issues with defiance v.

That's quite an expensive SSD for the budget - SSDs being expensive at the moment anyway, and PCIe NVMe SSDs being even more expensive than Sata ones. Plus the SSD makes no difference to framerate, and it's easy to swap games between drives.

There's also little difference between 8gb and 16gb RAM for gaming performance. Certainly 16gb is something you'll want down the line, but in view of RAM prices at the moment and the limited budget, you may prefer to stick to 8gb and upgrade later.

The GTX 1070 ti is only £35 more than the 1070 but is a fair bit more powerful. If getting a 1070, one might as well get a 1070 ti.



Maybe something like this as a basis, which you can fine-tune in terms of RAM, SSD, etc once you've picked a monitor and know how much £ you have left over

The S340 is one of the most compact ATX cases PCS offer - the footprint is very similar to minoi ITX cases like the 130 Elite or Node 304

I even considered the vanguard gamer all in one but it's 1060 on a 2k screen, not enough at 2k.

I'd suggest the S340 over the SR620P - the S340 is a little more compact overall, and has 3 fans preinstalled. (Unlike the SR620P which appears to have none...?)

Same comments about RAM and SSDs - these are areas you can save on.

The WD Blacks are poor value given the alternatives. In some situations they're not much faster than a Sata drive, while being fairly pricey. PCS are using the old WD Black drives, not the new iteration that has just been released and is a lot better. The Intel drives would be worth considering if you're set on 500gb NVMe.

You should go for a larger PSU or else you'll risk overly limiting yourself with future upgrade options.

A 1080p cheap monitor like that Samsung isn't a great pairing for a 1070 ti, which can handle 1080p high refresh or 1440p very happily.

Edit: And I usually advocate against AIOs where there are viable alternatives.

I'll have a play with that, thanks. I had the wd black in my Defiance I had for a few days lol it was nice. Like the idea of the nvme drives. My current laptop has a hdd and an ssd. Windows boots the hdd up when not used, so wanting a single good m2.

Personally If going for an M.2 NVMe, I wouldn't go for less than a 970 Evo. And at 500gb, the 970 Evo is almost £100 more than a 500gb WD Blue 3D NAND SSD. That's a lot of cash for 0 framerate. It would near enough buy you an upgrade to an i7 for example.

This is one of the reasons I haven't bought a 960 Evo / 970 Evo (and a PCIe card to fit it in, as I have an old 'pooter)

I did wonder about i7's and if needed for gaming, nice to know they are not essential. I often stream as well using shadowplay so that's gpu based not cpu like obs.

The Titan cooler's fine for a stock i5. The Frostflow 100 or CM212x air cooler (£22/£29 ones) if you want to splash out. You honestly don't need any more.

If you think you might want to stream using the CPU at any point, then an i7 - or a system built around an AMD R5 or R7, would be greatly preferable.

I'd honestly have loved to have kept it. I hope they fix the issues and release a shielded version so you can type. My current laptop gets hot on the right which is fine. Who wants heat under wasd? Lol

Yeah, I saw this about the mobo. Could always give PCS a call tomorrow to see whether it will be in stock soon. The configurator gives an ETA of 21 June but they might always have more up to date info.

They might let you add a wifi card in without it affecting the discount. Since you're not changing a component, just getting an add-on piece. Worth asking if you phone them and it's easier than ordering one separately
