i7 7700HQ/ 1050ti Optimus VIII: Buy Now or Wait?

With news of the Intel/ AMD partnership for 8th Gen Core H Series Laptop CPU's (CPU and GPU on same die) , am I likely to see these chips outperform the above CPU/ dedicated GPU in tasks such as gaming?

I leave to study abroad in late February and need a laptop pretty soon that can handle gaming and office tasks. I'm just concerned that a dedicated GPU may be rendered redundant with the introduction of these new chips. Are they manufactured on the same process?

Thanks.

Nobody knows, but I don't think so. The speculation I've seen suggests it would be quite a bit lower end than a 1050 ti, if it's Vega with 10 CUs.

If there's a 20 CU part with some high ends specs then maybe.

These might get picked up by the likes of apple and PC OEMs like HP before they get around to Clevos. They might not even make it there, we'll have to see.

It seems unlikely it would be any time soon though.

Thanks for the response.

Are you saying that you anticipate the 8th gen H CPU's not being widely adopted for a while then?

Guess I might as well jump in now, whilst the £20 off is in swing.

I was talking about the 8th Gen + AMD graphics combo. But the 8th Gen H series isn't even out yet afaik? It's only Kaby Lake refresh for the ULVs.

For gaming with a GTX 1050 ti, there would be almost no difference in most games anyway, since you'd be limited by the GPU. Even moreso as titles get more demanding.

Thanks for your input. Finally gone ahead and ordered. February isn't far away, and I can't be bothered to play the waiting game!

Thanks again for your input mate. Always helpful.

I hope I don't regret leaving the 4k screen; I think the battery life gains will make me happy however. Its not just the increased resolution that had me interested in 4k, it's also the tendency for said panels to have greater general quality overall (better colours etc). I really want you to talk me out of changing to the 4k display!

I wonder if I can order a spare battery from PCS at a later date?

PCS do sell spare parts and upgrades. I haven't looked recently but in the case of our 2012 Optimus they had power adapters and batteries on sale for many years in the spare parts section.

Not sure if they still do but they used to have an "upgrades" section for things like more RAM, storage, etc, and a separate "spare parts" section for the laptops for batteries etc. So if you don't see a battery under upgrades, look for spare parts.

Yes, they have an upgrades section on the main site where it lists all the components you may need like batteries and keyboards.

I ordered my vortex in 2014 and they’ve still got spare batteries available to buy.

Thanks all. I definitely made the right choice with regards to the display? I'll be typing a lot of word documents, so is it worth the upgrade?

Definitely not not word documents.

As Tech Radar puts it:
"Assuming that you are sitting at 30-inches from your display and your eyesight is 20/20, any more resolution than about 220 pixels per inch is going to be indistinguishable," he said. The two most common screen sizes for 4K laptops are 13.3- and 15.6-inch. At those sizes, pixel density exceeds the 220 ppi density by roughly 60 and 110 or more pixels per inch, meaning all those extra pixels no longer add anything to what the human eye can perceive at a normal laptop distance.

I have the laptop now, and I'm mostly very happy with it. However, when on charge, the fans turbo up pretty high, and this is unrelenting, no matter what I'm doing. After playing a game, the CPU temperatures stay high and the fans are blasting even on the desktop.

However, when running on battery the laptop stays very quiet and cool. Strange!

It's weird, as the power plan is set to balanced. With literally zero activity the fans will ramp up and then down again.

Okay... new update... the CPU is blasting out at around 60-80 degrees when plugged into AC. When unplugged and running on battery, the laptop runs pretty much silently, and the CPU barely raises above 40 degrees.

This makes me believe that the AC power is heating up the CPU in some manner, or, the power plan of the laptop (balanced) is thrusting the CPU into turbo mode even when idling on the desktop. The fans intermittently run at 100% when plugged into AC. Any ideas? Thank you in advance fellows.

That card would never perform well at 4k, you did well to avoid it. The best atm is 120mhz panels for laptop gaming.

Use msi afterburner to set a custom fan profile or use the clevo custom centre to change your fan profiles, if it has the software installed.
