I'm in a bit of a sticky situation.....

I recently ordered an Octane II pro with a fairly high end spec (6700k, 16GB RAM, NVme M2 drive, etc) but I've recently been notified that the chassis won't be in stock till after the 24th of June, pretty much guaranteeing that the laptop won't be delivered until July.

With the recent release of the 1080 and the impending release of the 1070 I can only imagine that the mobile versions of the card will be available soon after July (rumours are saying August/September).

This has left me wondering if I've made the right decision or not. It's a hell of a lot of cash for a laptop with a graphics chip that is going to be blown out of the water with a non-flagship variant of the new cards.

I'm thinking of cancelling my order and just seeing what comes out of the woodwork. I've already called PCS regarding it and other than an apology for the situation the only other offer I was given was a refund. I'm seriously considering taking it as I'm going to be paying interest on a credit card for a purchase I haven't even received yet.

Unfortunately we aren't privvy to what PCS have in store for the future of the various laptop models and builds so it's all a guessing game.

What would you do?

I would wait, I was also thinking of buying a laptop but there is no rush from my part and could do it by the end of the year.

I'm pretty much the same. It's my impetuousness that gets the best of me though :D

I've never had a gaming PC or Laptop (plenty of high end laptops and desktops but never with a proper card installed), I've only ever had consoles. I've gotten right into FSX which is a highly intensive CPU game, but not so much the GFX card. I just want to treat myself to an all out monster so that I can play anything I wish.

We aren't wealthy so this would be a very extravagant purchase for me, the last thing I want to do is pay all that money and then end up regretting my purchase within a matter of weeks because I could have had something better. I understand that this is always the nature of computing etc, but we're potentially right on the cusp of something great with regards to mobile gaming so I think I'll just sit tight and see what's around the corner.

Cancellation email sent.

I'm exactly the same, ordered a reference 1080 because I wanted it NOW, then cancelled and am in the queue for a good aftermarket that I may have to wait a month for.

I'd say it's well worth waiting, for either of those mobile cards, they will be a major step up from the 980.

I need to find something to take my mind off it now. All I've done since is look at laptop specs and weigh up the pro's and con's. The MSI Stealth Laptops are really turning my head but they just don't have the all out grunt of the Octane II pro. The only real appeal is how small/light the chassis is and the fact that it's available with a 4k screen. The Octane II demolishes it in every other aspect.

Arghhhhhhhhhhh

Is it too much to ask to want a desktop CPU & 1080 GFX card in a chassis that weighs nothing with a 4k screen?? Come on PCS, get on it :D

The agony your're feeling now if you cancel and wait will be nothing compared to the disappointment of buying now and then seeing what you could have had if only you'd waited.....

Dear Lord, please give me the gift of patience. But give it to me NOW!

I seem to recall a article indicating that Nvidia are scrapping mobile GPU variants of the 10** series cards. I think they are opting for desktop cards in mobile chassis this time round.
Let me see if I can find the article.

EDIT:

According to our contacts, Nvidia is readying the release of its new 10-series chips for notebooks. The kick is, they won't be M versions of desktop GPUs. They will be the same chips used on the desktops, just operating at a lower TDP—we're told there will be the same number of shader units, etc.

Yeah that's exactly what I'm expecting to be honest. I firmly believe the mobile version of the GTX980 was the starting point (the card that's featured in the Octane II Pro). I'm hoping that the new cards are going to be a direct swap into the current MXM slot. If that's the case I guess the next level of gaming laptop is right around the corner with PCS.

By then higher resolution screens are also likely to be available

I was surprised they haven't already been released. It seems pretty common place nowadays. Perhaps waiting to bring them out in tandem as I dare say the 1080 will be able to finally make full use of a 4k screen.
