I'm looking to upgrade my Graphics card but...

I can't figure out what cards are better than what I have.

I'm running a "512MB GeForce 8800 GTS 512" which I know isn't anything amazing, the reason I want to replace it is that if I try and play bluray etc through my TV via my PC I get an annoying whistling sound constantly coming through the tele. It only happens when the PC is running through it, the other channels are all fine and it goes when I unplug the wires. I think it is because I am running the sound out of the headphone jak and the video out of a HDMI lead connected via a DVI:HDMI converter so my 8800 GTS is sending out a dvi signal through the hdmi port into the tele. I am assuming that if I get a graphics card with a HDMI port instead then there will be no issues and I should get a better experience watching stuff in HD.

I know I can get quite cheap cards with HDMI ports, but I generally want something better than what I have now, with a HDMI port, and preferably 2 extra ports for dual monitors alongside the tele (though I wouldn't force that one!) I looked online and tried to keep it simple by getting all the specs of my card and comparing them against the specs of other cards but there were always numbers that were lower which suggested the card I was looking it was not as good (I don't know if that is the case though)

The kicker is I don't really want to be spending massively, the wife just wont like it if I do and I understand why! Any ideas what I can do or what would meet my needs? Sorry to make my first post a cry for help!

what PSU wattage do you have ? that may well limit the card you can have more than your wallet.

Quick look on ebuyer for gfx cards with hdmi
£23 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/244127
£50 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/179746
£130 - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/267363

Have a look on http://www.gpureview.com/ once you've come up with a couple in your price / system range

oh and before buying see if pcspecialist stock it or something similar.

Thanks, its a 550W PSU. I always check pc specialist :smartass: hehe. The problem with comparing these specs is just as I said, not all the numbers are better so I worry that I'm actually buying something that will work worse than the one I have some how.

Have you tried to eliminate the noise, some things you could try are,
1 disable microphone jacks.
2 disable or disconnect your PC speakers.
3 use the speaker jack (instead of the headphone jack) to feed your TV-sound
If the third option works you could use an audio extension cable from the speaker jack
to the front of your PC for easy access.

I tried these before, I think the problem is the HDMI side of it as I even tried replacing both wires incase it was them and I tried moving the wires incase it was electrical points causing intereferance. I have managed to get around the problem a bit by getting my media player to "normalize" the sound meaning it comes out louder through the tele and I can turn the tele down so the whistle isn't loud enough to hear. That has been enough to get by on so far but it just concerns me a bit that this whistle might be due to damage/something straining/anything really. It wasn't always there so I have no idea what changed.

I also miss having 2 monitors so that is a bit of a reason why I'd love to get one with 3 ports, though I imagine I could just get some kind of switch that could mean when I'm using the tele I have the monitor off, and vice versa.
