In need of advices and answers :)

Hello there!

I don't want to seem eager by posting a prospective spec so soon after I signed up but I guess since it's a company oriented board, it's alright :) I hope I'm not breaking the etiquette on here, I've checked the rules too ;)

So I want to replace Alfred, my old Asus G75 with something more reliable, easy to maintain and fairly powerful. I mostly play, write stuff and sometimes use Photoshop, AE and Premiere. I wanna be able to take it to my classes too, and I don't mind the weight - I used to take Alfred to classes though it was a 17'' and rather heavy.
I have a 1600 euros budget but I can go a little over it I guess ... The following set-up is priced at 1750.

I've come up with the following spec onto a 15.6 Vortex IV :

Memory Card Reader
Internal 9 in 1 Card Reader (MMC/RSMMC/SD: Mini, XC & HC/MS: Pro & Duo)
Thermal Paste
ARCTIC MX-4 EXTREME THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND (11 €)

I'm used to brand named laptop so I don't always get exactly what I want everywhere, which left me with some questions regarding my selection :

- Regarding the RAM, both the Samsung and Kingstone seems to have the same specs, so I'm really confused ... Also, is there any advantage in having two 4 Go over a single 8 Go ?

- I've read the jargon section to get a grasp on notions such as RAID and I wondered if I could go with two 120 go SSD in RAID 0 rather than a single 240. RAID config doesn't appear in the setup page, so I guess I can't ? Is it overkill anyway ?

- Most brand named laptop meant for "gaming" come with the i7-4700MQ (2.4 GHz), is there a point in taking the i7-4800MQ (2.7 GHz) ? (If not it'll bring the whole thing in back close to the set budget)

- Again, really confused at the wifi-cards, I took one rather randomly ... What do I need ? I have a poor connection speed (standard ADSL with huge speed decreased due to the length of the line) so I guess there's no point in getting amazing wifi speed ?

- Lastly I made research about the screen upgrade and it turns out it seems useless for me to go for the 95 gamut, since I don't plan on doing professional work in PS and AE and I certainly don't plan on learning how to calibrate a screen and then do so every time I move my computer. Wanna comfort me in this choice ? :D

I thank you all in advance for your answers and advices, I hope you're enjoying your last days in 2013 :)

Vorian.

PS : To Stephen and Ubuysa, if you come across this topic, I replied to your answers in my presentation thread before posting here but it seems my answer needs validation so ... :D

Id just go to the 'reviews' section and get the 17" Vortex IV review machine for £1449.

The 4700 cpu is ample and everything else you might need is in there. Just don't try and configure it or you'll lose the associated discount of it being a review laptop.

Thanks for your suggestion :) I've checked it and I have a few questions : If I order it as it is, it'll have both a UK power lead and an UK keyboard ? And no dead pixel guarantee ? Also I'm trading a 240 Go SSD for a 120 Go and I don't need the extra HDD ... It seems the only thing I get improved is the RAM, which I can switch to 16 Go on my set-up if I decrease the CPU from 2.7 to 2.4 ?

It's just a suggestion to save a bit of money. If you want a larger ssd then go for your build, there's nothing inherently unbalanced with it!

What are you going to save games into without a larger hard drive to go with the SSD? 240gb won't get you very far...

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't mentioned it in this thread (I thought I did but it was in my presentation topic) but I salvaged the G75 HDDs so I can always mount one in it, right ? Anyway I have like 2 games I play regularly, then I just install them, finish them and delete them when I'm done. Anyway I could find a convertor for the power lead but I can't really cope with a QWERTY keyboard :/

Thanks a lot for your input though :)

I know I've asked a lot of questions and I'm sorry but I have yet another one ... Is 8 Go RAM enough? Most "gamer" builds I see have 16, but I don't even know if it's needed.

Thanks in advance :sweatdrop:

It is plenty for gaming.

Overkill and unnecessary, you also compromise on size of the drive

Killer 1202 wireless card. Some people have issues with the intel wireless card.
