In serious need of help for desktop spec!

So where to begin?!

I originally was after a laptop but realised I didnt need one at all and I am now after a desktop. I did have a laptop spec i was happy with and almost ordered which came in at around £750, heres the link to that thread:

http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?11070-Help-on-my-final-spec-please!

I was looking for a desktop with a tv tuner but have scrapped this idea. I think I might go for a TV and use this as a monitor? Does anyone have any experience doing this or any feedback?
Or does anyone know if i can connect say my xbox to a hdmi monitor and use my monitor for xbox gaming?

Anyways, onto spec. I dont really have a clue where to start. The machine will be mainly used for gaming and watching films, the game I mostly play is WoW, however i do also play the likes of bf/mw that sort of thing.

I seem to be able to get a bit of a better graphics card with an AMD setup but have no experience with AMD and havent heard the best things about them, does anyone have any info or think I should steer clear?

My budget is looking to be around £800 without a monitor. (give or take £100 if gonna be worth it)

I will post what I think is the best AMD and intel spec i can get for this price but dont have a clue to be honest, so if someone could post up what they think the best (pref intel) spec is for this amount. I would be extremely greatful.

Many many thanks in advance! Im so lost!

If you get a good monitor they tend to come with HDMI and DVI ports so you could hook up your console and the PC no problems. A TV would also be perfectly fine if you wanted.

Will play WoW well, and has plenty of room to upgrade the GPU to a top spec one later should you wish. The only slightly weak link might be the HDD, not that its a bad drive but ideally you would want a caviar black to decrease startup and software loading times, the price of those is sky high at the moment due to flooding when they are made.

Thanks a lot for your reply mantadog. Good to know i have got room to play in the tv/monitor area. The spec your posted looks really nice, I could really do with keeping the costs down as low as possible though so i have more room for the keyboard/mouse tv/monitor im after.

Do you have any experience with AMD setups? how would they compare to an intel i5 setup?

Also whats the best spec i could get for around 700-750? just trying to get an idea here.

Thanks for all your help really is appreciated pal!

If you were looking to get the cost down to £700 you could go down the AMD route. My last 2 pc's have been AMD, and they have served me well, they offer better value for money but with less top end performance.

The above is about as low as i would dare go for something that would last you a while. The weak link here in my opinion would be the CPU, its a generation behind the i5 and will start to feel its age sooneras its not something you can easily change like a GPU. Thats not to say it will be out of date tomorrow, it will serve you well for a couple of years yet, just that the i5 would go on for a bit longer with a GPU upgrade.

Thanks for all your replies guys! Really helping me out here.

So just a couple of things, so your saying this AMD PHENOM II X4 QUAD CORE 980 (3.70GHz/8MB CACHE/AM3) is a stronger core than the i5?!

I was just leaning toward going for that then trying to decide on a gpu!

Zredarb

Bronze Level Poster
Okay cool, one decision made then im going for the i5!

Now the motherboard and gpu!

i dont really understand what the difference is between the two motherboards? What would the dearer one mean to me as a user?

And as for gpu, whats best around the price of the gtx 560? do i get a huge increase in performance for a small increase in price or is there something a bit cheaper that is real good value for performance?

Sorry i really dont have a clue!

All help greatly appreciated

MadMan

The more expensive motherboards allow you to have more than one gpu if you need it. For gaming the minimum gpu id recommend is the 6870/560 ti for good 1080p gaming. If you can squeeze a 6950 then go for it as I can vouch for that card :)

Zredarb

Bronze Level Poster
Thanks a lot for your help again !

So if im wanting to stick to a single gpu the basic motherboard is fine?

As for the gpu, just how much better is the 6950 than a 560ti? This is the current build im looking at, all feedback greatly appreciated, especially on which gpu to go for whilst keeping the total cost around £1000,

thanks again

Yeah but that motherboard you chose hasn't got usb 3.0 which you might need later on. The 6950 is slightly better than the 560 ti but then again the 560 ti direct competitor is the 6870. Have a look at this spec.

Thanks a lot for that! will change that now.

Is it worth stepping down to 4gb ram? would i notice any difference? Ive been told different things..

Anything else you notice that should be changed or could be changed ot help me save or anything crucial I should include for a bit more?

Am i right in thinking a 500gb black would give me much better performance than a 1tb green?

Thanks in advance for all your help guys!

Also, sorry but just how much difference would I see between the 6870 and 6950 gpu?

Wondering if i would be able to get away with this cheaper gpu? how would the 6870 compare to the gt555 i was originally considering in my laptop build??

Thanks again!

Blacks are faster then Green, greens are more eco thus the name green and black is the power version. As for the ram the price differences isnt huge and its worth it for the future I would say.

Okay grand great advice pal!

So I know the gpu is going to be a lot better. Do you think the jump from the 6870 to the 6950 is worth the additional £80 to make it a bit more futureproof? Or would you leave it?

Thanks in advance again for anymore advice!
