Intel/AMD...

Hi,

I have specced a Intel Gaming Rig, but want to do an AMD one to see which comes out cheaper... Now my question is; If there is one, what is the AMD equivalent of the Intel Core i5-2500 Quad Core.

Thanks

the AMD will likely come out cheaper. the six core will come close to or in par witht he i5 2500 but for gaming along with general use, a mere amd quad 955 will be enough to handle todays games and ones coming down the road. a good amd 970 will do the trick for just about anything you do along with gaming. So long you have a decent graphics card to back it up like a gtx560ti, you will be in good gaming hands.

And what is the budget or the price of what you have come up with for the intel build?

Well the direct AMD equivalent to the i5 2500 would be something like x4 955, 965 or 970 all of which would be slightly slower but probably not enough to have any sort of impact on gaming performance if you had a decent GPU.

You would end up having to sacrafice the GPU on an intel build, as intel is overall more expensive, However it is a faster CPU

Price/performance AMD wins so if your on a tight budget go AMD

I think it's a great spec, though i'm sure someone will recommend an nvidia gpu.
for another £15 or so you could get the 1TB hard drive, just a thought.

Get that and just upgrade to Bulldozer if you find it too slow. It will easily kill sandy so you can go the cheaper route :)

Bulldozer may destroy sandy (not by much) but it will then get sat on by the ivy bridge processors xD

Then there is the Die Shrink of Zambezi which will molest ivy bridge and outpace ivy's successor until the die shrink

So this spec is good then... I wouldnt upgrade it until it needed it, and if its fast enough, it shouldn't need it for a while...

Got PS3 for Blu-ray movies, so dont need that :) Probably only use comp for Gaming and Interweb.

You will get better quality if you run it from a top spec pc. I believe ps3s stream bli ays at around 45fps and you will max your TV (probably 60hz) on a top spec pc

AMD is obvs going to be way cheaper.
AMD - Gaming
Intel - Video Editing
Overclocking? - Intel
There really isn't a better one. it's what you are using the PC for.

Intel for everything if you can afford it, i5 (not even the best intel) outperforms every AMD currently available and still wont be far behind the bulldozer range when they are released

Intel is winning at the moment but when Next Gen Bulldozer comes out (2013) I think that is when AMD start winning specs wise again
