is 6990m worth the upgrade for gaming?

The 6990m is a very good card, especially for the price. However,it isn't quite as good as the 580m and it doesn't have as good driver support. It also runs slightly hotter. Your choice though, if you can afford it, the 580m would be the best, if not, the 6990m will be fine.
The advantages and disadvantages of each card are as follows:
GTX580M - Advantages
1. Good driver Support.
2. Most Powerfull Mobile GPU available.
3. Runs quite cool compared to AMD cards.
4. CUDA support.
GTX580M - Disadvantages
1. Expensive!
AMD 6990M - Advantages
1. Almost as powerfull as GTX580M.
2. A lot cheaper than GTX580M.
AMD 6990M - Disadvantages
1. Runs a lot hotter than the GTX580M
2. Worse driver support than Nvidia.
GTX580M - Advantages
1. Good driver Support.
2. Most Powerfull Mobile GPU available.
