Is it worthwhile taking advantage of the current intel free games deal?

Just curious really...

I got a promotional code for use on the intel website. Not entirely sure what the games are. Just Cause 4 is mentioned, so I suppose I could research that. A quick look at a video of it is it looks like a third person adventure game.

But there are other games, too, apparently, but in order to find out what those games are you have to sign your life away to intel and Green Man Gaming (who ever they are).

Has anyone here taken up that offer? What other games are available?

cheers, and thanks,

Get the games. Just Cause is a fairly anarchic 3rd person action / shooter game. I think the idea is that you need to cause as much chaos as you can, for the purpose disrupting evil dictators.

Green Man Gaming are a legit games store (i.e. no grey market stuff - I think there was an issue with some ubisoft keys a while ago but they're back on the IsThereAnyDeal list now which is a good guide). I've shopped with them plenty of times. They also publish games, much like Humble do. I think they're from Northern Ireland (apologies if it's actually ROI) and the business is registered in London.

As for signing up for an account with Intel or giving them an email address, it's pretty innocuous as far as I can tell. I signed up for giveaways with them and a) got Assassin's Creed Origins free, which was pretty nice, and b) haven't had my life hacked, so it's all fine.

Certainly better to have the games and not necessarily play them than find yourself spending cash on them later. Also, they could be fun. One of the games I've enjoyed the most in the last decade was Borderlands 2 that I had no interest in until I got it free with a GPU, redeemed it after it had supposedly expired, and found it was fantastic. Tried to redeem an Intel CPU giveaway game a while ago, after the deadline, and found it wasn't possible. So certainly worth taking advantage of.

Hi Oussebon,

Thanks for the advice :)

I'll sign up and see what comes.

Regarding Just Cause, and 3rd person games. I love watching other people play them but I'm terrible at playing them for some reason. So I've always avoided them and stuck with first person games. Like you said about Borderlands, if I actually try it out I might well get used to it and enjoy the experience.

I think it goes back to games like Street Fighter, which required you to hit certain combinations of keys for various actions. I'm just too slow and by the time I've thought about what I have to do I'm respawning.

Even some of the first person stuff eludes me. For instance, in DOOM 2016 there a a whole host of actions or "glory kills" that are rewarded. Anything that involves "killing from above" I find impossible to do.

Anyway, I'll sign up and report back.

cheers

If you need an email address to sign up for anything get yourself an addition gmail, yahoo, etc. free email address just for the purpose. I never use my 'real' email address to sign up for things on the web - no, not even these fora! ;)

I downloaded Just Cause 4 and, to be honest, I don't like it. I think I am just so used to playing first person shooters that I can't get my head around third person stuff.

I liked dragging myself around with the grappling hook and jumping off ledges and flying around using the parachute, but that was about it really. Didn't (couldn't) get far as I just kept dying such is my uselessness at computer games in general. I couldn't immediately notice any sort of difficulty level so perhaps I should look closer into that.

I have to say that I have rarely ever completed a game. The closer I get to the big boss at the end the harder it gets, to the point that I cannot progress any further.

Back when DOOM 2016 came out my lads bought it for my birthday and I thought, "uh oh... another game I won't be able to finish."

But DOOM has a real easy mode and, even though I really did struggle, I was amazed that I was able to finish off the Big Boss right at the end. I was pretty amazed and so pleased that I was able to experience completing such a great game.

More DOOM, then, I reckon...

I was going to suggest lower difficulty settings, but there aren't any as you say. Some people can be snobby about lowering settings but not every game needs to be a challenge to be fun.

Just Cause 4 didn't review particularly well, but some people like it. At least you know you'll never have to spend money on it to find out :)

Did you get PUBG as well? I wouldn't spend cash on it as it's probably = not my cup of tea but I'd try it if it were free to see what all the fuss was about.

DOOM is generally thought of as one of the best titles in recent years, of course.
