Hi,

I suppose the term 'basic games' is subjective. I would say yes it is plenty for basic games and school work.

Questions I would ask you to consider though is portability and longevity. How portable do you need this to be? Will it need to be taken into school/college and work on a desk without mains power available for a 2 hour lecture where you are making lots of notes?

Will this need to last you for a few years and what might you need it to do in a few years time? It's a big purchase and I would assume you won't be replacing every 2-3 years.

If you've gone for a M.2 SATA storage device for your OS and programs then there is limited value in spending a lot on a fast hard disk. Is there a cheaper option for the hard disk which allows you to spent more elsewhere? Presumably it will just store music, documents and so forth.

If you post back some specifics of games and what sort of work this laptop would do and we can offer some more specific advice.

I am with Frank about the size - a 17" laptop is a huge beast. They're really not that portable.

Just to add to the above, you can't upgrade a laptop's graphics card. Therefore it usually makes sense to get the best graphics card you can afford, since once you need more horsepower to play new games in the future you'll need to buy a whole new system.

Of the two above, I'd say the Optimus as it has by far the better GPU. The CPU being an i5 8300H will make almost no difference to the great majority of games - most games caring far more about the GPU. And the i5 8300H is more than enough for schoolwork and even some quite demanding workloads.

If you're buying a spec with 8gb RAM, best to get 1x8gb rather than 2x4gb. This way, you have room to add more later and so it us much cheaper in the long run (as opposed to buying 2x4gb and having to replace it when you want 16gb in the future)

If 15.6" is an option, consider the Vyper specs off the Review Section. The Review builds have fixed specs and discounted prices.
Vyper 15.6" with i7 8750H, 8gb RAM, GTX 1050 ti, 250gb SSD £800 https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/configure-review/268/
Vyper 15.6" with i7 8750H, 16gb RAM, GTX 1060, 500gb SSD, 1TB HDD, £1150: https://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/configure-review/266/

If the specs you did above were about £1000-£1050, the £1150 Vyper spec above offers overwhelmingly better value and performance per£.
