Issue with Steam and Sound, launching steam games stops all sound

Hey all

Got a new PC yesterday, a proper gaming PC to play the most recent games on Ultra. So I installed Skyrim yesterday and tried it and sound works fine. However, any games I installed today and tried the sound for it just won't work. It will launch the game but there will be no sound, then when I exit from the game I can't get sound on the machine whatever I do. If I restart, sound comes back but I can't get the sound to play when I launched Saints Row 4, Just Cause 2 etc... Skyrim and Dungeon Defenders are fine but I feel sick. Even with headphones there is no sound :(

On the Windows desktop, right-click on the sound icon, and click on Playback Devices. Go to this tab, and make sure it's set to "Do Nothing". I had the exact same issue as you a while back, and this solved it. Windows seemed to think that Steam was always recording/receiving audio.

Direct X would update (or try to) everytime you install a game, so that should be up to date - especially with the newer games.

Does this happen with EVERY game?
Have you tried to update all of your drivers (including the sound drivers)?

Are your headphones USB headphones or through the audio jacks too?

Some games are working fine, others aren't. Got the headphones working now, seems to have been a bizarre problem with teh HDMI cable not liking certain newer games. So I switched to DVI to HDMI cable and am running sound through Headphones, that seems to be doing the trick for now.
