oK so i bought a gaming pc from pcs about a year a go i have now sold it but something that happens when i start up always bugged me and when i googled it i got a different response to the one pcs support gave me.

On start up it makes one beep - they said that's supposed to happen, google said it's a ram problem.
However when i overclock it no beep so im totally confused as to why?

I am a bit confused. You are asking for advice for a system that you don't have anymore? Have you try requesting an RMA?

Not advice no, just wondered why and who was more likely to be correct as i has bugged me since day 1.

In my experience one beep usually means everything is okay, post beep indications can vary though depending on motherboard manufacturer.

I agree with Vanthus, one beep typically means your all good. It does vary from manufacturer to manufacturer but the rampage iv definitely has a single post beep on startup.

Both are correct.

In your BIOS you will find (or would have found) a setting to enable "beep on start". I have it set in my BIOS and I subconsciously listen for that beep when I push the on switch and walk away. It's there to tell you the BIOS has started.

All BIOSs run a Power On Self Test (POST) on first switch on and if they detect any hardware issues they tell the user by sounding a sequence of beeps. How many and what they mean varies depending on the BIOS manufacturer. Many BIOSs emit a single beep if there is a RAM problem but you'd need to check your BIOS manufacturer to be sure.

So it could have been either. If the laptop was working ok then it was the "beep on start" beep. If it wouldn't boot properly or at all it was probably faulty RAM.

Generally 1 beep is usually OK. It does vary from motherboard to motherboard though. If you check your motherboard manual it will tell you what all the 'beep codes' mean.

Yeah booted fine, but why no beep when overclocked not that it matters really just curious?

You might have turned off the post beeps when you OC'd the rig by mistake. My computer still beeps OC or no OC and I have a rampage iv (which is what you had originally I think?).
