Hi I've been gaming for about 20 years on pc now and have allway's wanted a gaming laptop plus I do a lot of video editing for my drone footage and the portability will come in handy. Currently running a desktop with:

I7-6700k closed loop water cooled.
R9290x 2GB
Windows 10 64GB
16GB ram
Samsung 250GB EVO SSD
2TB SEAGATE

I've just orderd the:

octane IV 17''
I7-8700k
GTX1080
16GB corsair 2400MHZ ddr4 x1
500GB Samsung 850 evo ssd
2tb Seagate firecuda

all the rest is standard apart from the killer wifi.

Is anyone using one of these setups and will I notice much difference in gaming from my desktop with the R9 going to the GTX1080 also is it the desktop 1080 equiviliant. thanks I look forward to hearing some feedback.
I know most people will think I'm mad going from desktop to laptop but ill allways have my desktop aswell.

Your laptop will be significantly more powerful than your desktop, especially the CPU. The GPU may offer performance fairly similar to your 290x.

The GTX 1080 isn't a full desktop GTX 1080, but then laptop ones normally aren't.

You can get a sense of the relative performance differences here:

And also here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphics-Cards.13849.0.html

I'd suggest amending your order to get the RAM as 2x8gb so that it runs as dual channel. Some things may not care a great deal, but others will benefit a fair amount and you can see measurable gains for video editing with Handbrake and Premiere Pro for example.
