Laptop for Extremely Detailed 3D Models

Hi guys, bit out of my element on this one. We have an engineer on site who needs a laptop that can work in real time with a gigantic Navisworks model.

To say it's not ideal conditions is an understatement but I need something with serious beef. Looking at around the £3000+ mark but it's fairly flexible

I'd say a DTR is the only direction I can go but I've not a clue here when trying to spec one up, hopefully you guys can help I'm lost in the laptop world

Does it support hardware acceleration ie gpu acceleration?

Yes it does, I'll tell you the biggest problem we're having right now is when changes are made to the model it's taking minutes to update them and anything he tries to save from the model it's the CPU just spazzes out and generally crashes.

I'd say the update problem is probably due to him being located currently in a basement under a massive structure, but we're trying to solve with access points

Currently he has an i79850H I believe waiting on confirm on the GPU and 32GB of 2666Mhz ram

I would say AMD is a must then, more cores should help.

It's the Nova that would be perfect for this kind of stuff.

Cheers mate, just had a quick look are there any offering current gen CPU's as the nova seems to have a 3700x and 2070 is the highest GPU I can select

Cheers mate, yeah see that also doesn't seem to offer the 5900x and the 3080 combo which is honestly what I'm going to need. Thanks though all food for thought

Just noticed too but Samsung instead of Intel for your 500gb drive isn’t a lot more cost wise.

The Tong Fang chassis are the only concern with these builds, they don't have the best rep especially for something that's going to be pushed fairly hard to it's limits

Not sure about the Valeon but the Ionico received good reviews so hopefully it was just a glitch.

Will also add that other than my keyboard (fading keys) my laptop runs perfectly not that I put it through the paces like this one will be by the sounds of it.

Yeah it's going to be rendering a data centre in real time with thousands of people working on it at real time

Few thousands rooms with 10's of thousands of items per room. The level of details will be intense and it'll be running at least 12 hours a day

Will that not be better off on a desktop then as in all honesty I don’t think any ‘gaming’ laptop is built to run 12 hours a day with the heat that would generate.

And doing it on a desktop you could probably get a better CPU/GPU combo (5950x/3090)?

Nah desktop isn't feasible for where he is lads it was my first thought

He's currently in a basement that's under construction in a giant data centre site. He barely has lights never mind room for a desktop

Ideally we can get a decent internet connection set up down there so he can remote out to one of our machines here in our offices that would work perfectly and does work perfectly for other areas of the site but it's just not ready in that location for that yet

Nothing about this is ideal but £3K in the context of a team of men standing round waiting to see where they can install things is a very small amount in the grand scheme
