Laptop turns off when I pick it up

Hello,

Laptop is a few years olds now.

In the last year or so, whenever I pick it up from the bottom, specifically around where the battery is, the laptop turns off completely.

Weirdly - this only happens with the case on.

I have tried pressing down on the underside of things behind the case, but the laptop stays on.

It literally only turns off if the back case is on.

I don’t understand.

I have attached a video so it’s easier to show what I mean.

When I turn the laptop back on after the short,

Quite often it completely renders the Wi-Fi useless - it won’t give me the option to even view what networks are available & also it breaks the screen. I am able to see the screen I had on before the shirt on the new screen, if that makes sense.

Sorry my terminology is not great.

Does it turn off when plugged in or just when unplugged?

Have you checked that when clipping the base on that there are no loose cables trapping?

Check the battery connections in particular are not loose in anyway.

Yes, when plugged in too.

Yep, I’ve checked that there are no loose cables trapping and all battery connections seem solid.

I’m at a loss.

When this happened with our Dell Lappys in work the only thing that fixed it was a battery replacement.

When you say you have a case on it. What do you mean? Do you mean you have removed the bottom of the laptop covering and don't have any issues in that situation? If that's the case it's most likely a grounding issue.

Yeah, that's what it looks like in the video

Just watched the vid. Nice shorts

I would actually contact PCS. This isn't a very typical situation, but with the design similarities they may have a quick fix or may even offer some assistance outwith the warranty.

Better to ask PCS being the chassis experts over a third party.

Personally I would experiment and find the cause. That would annoy the life out of me. Difficult to describe steps to this not in person though so would leave to PCS.

Ha thanks, tbh I didn’t mean to feature them but I had to set my camera to 0.5 zoom.

I’ll give them a call tomorrow to see what their advice is!

I have tried to troubleshoot it myself, and yes it is absolutely annoying the life of me.

I am tampering and touching absolutely everything with the bottom covering off - and it stays on.

As soon as the bottom covering is back in place and I pick it up, it dies.

It does suggest there's a wire or something with an exposed conductor point that's connecting with the chassis, or perhaps is getting cramped when the lid is put on to the point it's connecting with something, just the little bit of pressure applied when touching the bottom completes the circuit and results in short.

Take a coaster (or something of similar square size) and with the bottom case off, carefully place it in different positions and lift (pressing your fingers underneath) simulating the case pressing on different areas of the interior then - you might be able to narrow down if the pressing of a wire is an issue somewhere - however it wont find a shorting of the wire on metal of course.

OK so I did a little bit of experimenting this morning.

I took a coaster and did as you suggested @Bhuna50 - no issues anywhere.

Put the bottom on, laptop switched off when picking up. Seems to be when I pick up from the area attached.

Cut out a little bit of my missus’s yoga mat (she’s gonna kill me) and put it between this area & the bottom case - no issues.

You can get thermal tape which is non conductive, stick that over the exposed contacts
