There's not much you can do to upgrade a laptop, except for the RAM. How much RAM does the system have at the moment?

The CPU may be slow but I've seen worse in old laptops.

The best you can do is perform a clean install of Windows XP or something. This should get things moving again. Alternatively consider Ubuntu Linux netbook remix which is easy to use and very light on system resources (and if you don't have an XP installation disc, free to download legally too).

I added RAM to my 8 year old ADVENT 7008 about a year ago (had 256mb, added 512). It helped when I had internet open and I wanted to open Excel for example. But gradually the ol' lappie slowed down again (constant CPU spikes to 100%). I added more RAM, but this time it didn't help. I think it can actually make thinks worse adding too much RAM if your CPU is not up to the job...(anyone have opinion on this?)

I can see now that my RAM usage is nowhere near full capacity, but the CPU is almost constantly maxed out. I'm going to reload XP on it to see what happens, just out of interest really.

On the bright side...my new PCS computer's CPU is trundling along at about 4-7% :)

It probably wouldn't make things worse, but if the CPU was maxed out constantly then the extra RAM might not make much of a difference either. With a desktop, the CPU is usually pretty strong. Laptops can harbour the same amount of RAM, but the CPUs are often significantly weaker.
