Linux + 17,3" OCTANE VI high specs

Hi,
just ordered + got my new desktop replacement with massive power for data analysis and predictive modelling.
Specs:

480 GB-ADATA SU650, 2,5" SSD, SATA 6 Gb (520 MB/R, 450 MB/W)
(german version)

Run on Ubuntu 18.04, everything works, unbelievable!
4K display recognized with standard driver, no black screens.
NVIDIA drivers installed with ppa repository, no problems, worked at first reboot.
CUDA 10.0 works.
cable internet + wlan works, no problems.
webcam is working.
Stresstesting CPU + GPU .. for 1h, no temp problems with "sensors" and "nvidia-smi" monitoring.

Even pcspecialist says they does not support Linux, I can confirm this Laptop is fully working under Ubuntu Linux 18.04. :punk:

Hello, welcome to the fora. Glad you're happy! :)

PCS only say that they can't offer any help or support for Linux on their builds, they're not saying that it won't run. Many customers run Linux on PCS builds, including you now! :)

Welcome to the fora. Nice looking machine, glad all went well. Most/all of the PCS machines are OK with Linux although there are usually a few tweaks needed to get it going, most of the problems I have had have been GPU-based but all that was needed was to find the correct driver.

A common fault is the keyboard back-lighting not being adjustable. There are ways around it although I have never bothered to try on my Octanes as was happy with the way it was.

Thanks, yes keyboard backlight is not adjustable under Linux. Its always "blue". Also after wakeup from standby (this also works).
But that's minor things. Totally ok.

I stressed the GPU with nerual net training code, nvidia-smi reads 152W power consumption. Card stays below 80 degree celsius when stressing for hours.
The highlight was that this laptop outperforms a overclocked desktop GTX 1080 Ti card on my test run (126s vs. 172s). Its about deep learning..

MKL Linpack runs well through, CPU does not overheat, stays in 80..90 degree range. Around 370GFlop.
I tried -100mv undervolting the CPU, had one freeze. Now running on -50mv. No crash from, will see.. CPU temps are a few degree lower.

Overall the thermal design seems to be very very well designed for a laptop.
I had thermal problems with my previous one.de laptop with 4core CPU and GTX 780 card.
Very good job pcspecialist !

update: after running the laptop since a few months and computing different things the cpu/gpu becomes hotter and the fan makes remarkable more noise. Reason was dust in the cooling fins. But the laptop can be easily opened and both fans can be unmounted. Then dust cleaning was easy. Now it runs at factory temps again with low fan speed. Still happy with the machine.

Glad the laptop is still running well. It is a pity there is no magic dust remover but as you say the Octane chassis is easy to work on.

after running over an year the HDD starts to make problems. Problems are system hanging, blinking etc.
Original HDD is a ADATA SU650. I ordered a new one (crucial 1TB). The rest works fine!
