Hi all,

Just joined in order to buy a PC worthy of playing LOTRO on ultra high settings with everything ticked (see Check my spec).

Anyone else on here play this game?

Still believe it to be the most immersive online fantasy game out there, and that is coming from an ex-WoW player!

When you say play? :D

I have an account, its VIP even, but I still only log in once a month at best and never actually do anything apart from go and look at something new if such a thing has been added :)

(Still lvl 65 I think)

Exactly the reason why I want a new PC to run Ultra-High on. Would you happen to know the graphics card requirement (and any other requirements) for the very best graphics? Would this do it?

Processor (CPU)
AMD BULLDOZER EIGHT CORE FX-8150 (3.60GHz/8MB CACHE/AM3+)
Motherboard
ASUS® M5A99X EVO:USB 3.0, SATA 6.0Gb/s, Quad CrossFireX™/SLI™
Memory (RAM)
32GB SAMSUNG DUAL-DDR3 1333MHz (4 X 8GB)
Graphics Card
2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 680 - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready
Processor Cooler
TITAN FENRIR EVO EXTREME HEATPIPE CPU COOLER (£39)

wow, considering my 570 can max bf3 (probably the most demanding game on the market) im 100% sure you'll max LOTR with ease, infact you can drop it quite a bit, perhaps a FX-4170, 8GB and a GTX560Ti 1GB, im sure that would max it out

EDIT: Infact after just checking the requirements, you would get away with something even cheaper a GT440 would probably do it although a 550Ti would definitely be a good idea incase you decide to play other games

Oh, and could you post the whole spec as well, just to check everything is ok

Like you said in your check this spec thread there are indeed no recommended specs...

Had a quick look at the various SoA, MoM, special edition and Compilation boxes around here and indeed they only show minimum specs. Never noticed this lol.

Nice find! When I was playing it here it was on core 2 duo 6600 @2.4GHz with and ATI X1900 and colleagues on the same with same cpu but with Geforce 9800 or 8800 and worked great at ultra.

Those recommended specs would take you to Medium Setting if you're lucky.

I'm running this:

Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz, x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9
Processor Count: 2
RAM: 3326 Mb
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 6200, 512 Mb

And on Ultra High, I get around 5-10FPS. It fails completely on my PC at high levels of graphics.

I think the recommended settings are not intended for the highest graphics unfortunately.

Recommended is usually defined as High settings, No AA or AF, 60fps average, 720p

Plus your 6200 is quite a bit lower than the 6800 which would have been one of the high end cards at the time

Look at the 500 series, there is a huge difference between the GT520 and the GTX580

Bit of a dunce when it comes to computing, sorry! :/

So just because my card is 512MB, it doesn't mean it's faster than one that is say, 128MB or 256MB, as these could be newer models? It's not all about the MB?

Correct, its not really about the MB/GB at all, though often higher level cards do tend to have more MB/GB

In terms of gaming in general, and more specifically LOTRO, how would you rank Graphics Card, Processor, RAM, any other componenets in importance of how good they are?

For example, so long as I have a VERY good graphics card, I wouldn't necessarily need a £1,500 system?

Graphics cards are usually done in numbers, the higher the number, the better the performance

550Ti < 560 < 560Ti < 570 < 580 < 590
although a 620 or something will not be better than a 590 as that is part of a new series

and you definitely need other parts for a gaming computer, a decent CPU, decent amount of RAM, decent HDD, PSU and so on are all required for a gaming PC, otherwise no one would buy any of the high end parts

Well for a start, gaming will not need 16GB, get the 8GB thats plenty

for what you want, this CPU is definitely overkill, get the FX-4170 instead

The 7950 will be used to a fraction of its full potential on LOTR, you can drop this card right down to a GTX550Ti and still get maximum

Upgrade the case to at least the coolermaster 310 (£35), although if you keep your current CPU and GPU, I'd recommend at least the T900 Maelstrom (£59)

Ideally, I want a solid gaming PC that will last me around 4 years (+) and play the majority of new games.

If this is possible by dipping way below £1,000, then all the better!

I just want a PC that can last a decent amount of time, play all new games, without the need for upgrading very frequently...

Wozza63

Biblical Poster
Oh right, you didnt mention you would be playing other games, in which case the current spec is pretty good, although even now, 8GB RAM is overkill but a good amount that most people choose, so save some money there and invest it in a much better case than your current one
