Loud fan

Hiya,

My first post so please go easy on me!

I have just bought a custom PC build from PCS and it was all running smoothly until last night when the fan that is located at the back of the case started spinning up and making such a loud noise. I straight away thought there was a problem so looked at temps but nothing seemed to be odd / out of the ordinary. Anyone provide me with anymore help/suggestions I have contacted support but as anyone I can't wait to find the answer out and am pulling my hair out over this.

All responses much appreciated!

Can you post your full spec? You should be able to copy-paste it from your main PCS account.

I would probably have expected PCS to have just connected the fans to the PSU rather than the mobo - which means that they should always have been spinning at max speed.

Can you follow the fan cable at the rear and see where it's plugged in? The mobo or a cable coming off the PSU.

While you're there, check to make sure there's nothing obstructing the fan or coming into contact with it - cables etc. And see if the fan is brushing against any part of the case.

If the fan's plugged into the mobo you may be able to just the speed with fan control software like AI Suite or possibly the BIOS itself.

If it's plugged into the mobo, isn't catching on anything, and is making a tremendous racket, it could just be faulty. I'd phone PCS - they can probably post you a replacement if they conclude it's faulty.

Hiya,

Thanks for the reply.

I have taken a look and the back chassis fan looks to be plugged into AIO socket in the mobo. I also can't seem to control fan speeds in bios even though it looked like I should be able to. I have also downloaded HWMonitor like PCS suggested and can't see any temp rises when the fan goes off crazy mad. I will now try out AI Suite and see if that gives me any luck.

Help much appreciated!

Not all fans can be controlled by software.

The fan spinning at max speed shouldn't make a damnable racket. It should just sound like a case fan. If the noise is really bad it might be worth phoning PCS to see whether it's faulty.

Okay after further looking into this it is in fact my CORSAIR 650W VS SERIES™ VS-650 POWER SUPPLY making the loud noise are these meant to be a loud fan noise or may I have a problem?

They're not particularly quiet - but they're not supposed to make a racket either. Check there isn't anything underneath the PC interfering with it etc. If the noise level has changed since you got it, it would be worth contacting PCS.

I have had a check and can't seem to see anything causing the problem I will give PCS a call and see what they have to say. Thanks for the help will be sure to give you some rep!

Just to close this thread out. I sent a video into PCS and they confirmed that the PSU had a problem. I am now getting an RMA on this.

Always worth checking these things - good to hear they're getting an RMA sorted (though obviously a shame it developed a fault so soon). Thanks for keeping us posted. :)
