Low fps Octane III

Hi,

I've had the Octane III for around a year now and used to be able to use Nvidia control panel to set res to 1440p at 100hz and play games at a decent frame rate of around 60-80 fps. But now fps only seems to reach 40-50 fps on average with it occasionally hitting 60 fps depending on where I am in the game. I thought gta 5 was having issues due to mods but I've tried running the game without mods and same issue occurs and even in other games that aren't modded and still get low frame rates where as it used to get decent frame rates. I have latest graphic drivers installed but still have the issue.

Anyone got any ideas on what is up with it?

Have you monitored your temperatures? You can download HWMonitor free, check your temps whilst idle and when gaming.

CPU and GPU appear to fine. Also notice it doesn't even run games at 60 fps at 1080p, something is defiantly wrong. Got a feeling it's something to do with the windows 10 creators update. Appears others have had performance issues since the update also but no one can figure out what is causing it exactly. I've turned of game DVR and the game bar with no avail but may try disabling it via regeddit see if that sorts it. I don't wanna have to do a clean install if I can help it but may have to do it as a last resort.

Okay so I've checked CPU temps with HWinfo and seems that max temp got to 92 degrees C and says it's been thermal throttling. I had the higher end thermal paste put in when I configured the specs do you think the thermal paste is the issue here or does it just need a clean out of dust with compressed air?

Best to start by clearing out any dust and making sure the fans are working optimally, then if it’s still overheating, a repast may be necessary. You’ll need to monitor your graphics as well, no point just concentrating on cpu.

I've decided I'm going to do a clean install of the OS to eleminate any software/driver issues, I have files on a separate ssd from OS so gonna take out secondary drive just to ensure it doesn't wipe it though I have also backed it up as a precaution. Whilst I have the laptop turned off I shall clean out the dust and then put it all back and set up the laptop see how it is. If still facing issues then shall have no option but to reapply thermal paste. Not applied thermal paste to a cpu before though lol don't wanna make it worse than it is.

So after doing a clean install of my OS, cleaning out some clumps of dust that were on the heat sinks the laptop runs quieter and also FPS is back to where it should be. However I updated to the newest Nvidia drivers and had the same issue so after all that was just a problem with the latest Nvidia drivers and just required me to download an older version and everything is okay. If only I had known before doing a clean install.

Oh well, a clean install is always a good thing to do periodically and especially with windows 10. So temps are back to normal are they? Sounds like it needed the clean out in general.

I try to clean mine inside the laptop and a clean reinstall every six months or with major windows updates if they come beforehand, tends to keep it performing well. Then I do a repaste every two years.

Yeah temps seem to be fine now. Did mean to keep check of dust regularly but it's been over a year since I've had it. Defiantly a lot quieter now there's not a clump of dust clogging up the heat sinks lol. I've only done a repaste in collage doing IT though was on a cheap PC so didn't matter if I messed it up and haven't got a lot of experience. Obviously not overly difficult but ik if there's too little or too much it'll cause damage.
