Low-ish cost gaming tower

Hi folks,

I am getting to the point where my four year old rig isn't cutting it with newer games, I am looking to upgrade. The budget I am setting is £900, but I'd prefer to do something for less. I am looking to run new games at a reasonable level, but I don't need to be blisteringly fast.

I live in SE Asia, so the temperature here is a big higher than normal (the coldest my living room ever gets is 24 degrees), so I need liquid cooling of some sort. My current PC doesn't have it, and doesn't overheat, but monitoring the temperatures, they are higher than I would like. Also, I chose the mobo and PSU with a view to adding a second GPU sometime in the future, so they are more than I need right now. I put a 500GB HDD in there, as I don't really do movies, or stuff like that, and have a plenty big enough external drive for my music and file backups. I have a monitor, keyboard and mouse already.

Could you offer me opinions on this? I'm happy to start from scratch if folks have better ideas; whilst I am familiar with PC hardware in general terms, I am not up with specifics of any given area. The kind of thing I am looking for is something that can compete with the PC Gamer Rig for price and performance.

I like your current spec - it will perform considerably better in certain areas than the comparison rig, as you would expect given the difference in price minus peripherals.

I would say get the silver warranty but i guess if the rig's going to be delivered to South East Asia then free collect and return doesn't really apply!

If the PC's primary use is to be for gaming then the most obvious price reduction will come in the form of an AMD system.

Here's your barebones:

I know it's stripped right down with no advanced cooling and without the option for CrossFire but it just shows you what you could save whilst still achieving decent enough performance.

Here's your improved version:

A build priced similarly to your own, with advanced cooling (that air cooler is just as good as a watercooler, slightly louder but slightly cheaper - up to you really). As you can see you can go down the CrossFire route as well.

Thanks for the feedback, Tom. That second rig is looking mighty attractive right now... Once customer services answers my e-mail regarding BFPO shipping and payment I'll be looking at doing so, soon.

Shane

So, my need for a new PC just got a bit more urgent when my old one died on me courtesy of a good-old Asian lightning storm. *sigh* My fault for not looking at the weather report and going out without unplugging it.

Anyhow, my budget will be £950, so I can add the water cooling in, and 5-day building.

However, I have a question about the GPU. Reading some reviews put the frame rates on a lot of modern games as surprisingly low (to my understanding, anyway). Am I better off going for a more expensive NVidia card, or will the AMD one above do what I want it to (games like Shogun 2 and Dragon Age II on high spec)? Also, I saw some reviews pointing to the nVidia GTX470 as being very good value, any thoughts?

Forget and foremost this is a gaming machine, with a small sideline in simple audio editing for radio use. But gaming is the primary focus.

Thanks,

Shane
