Most appropriate budget AMD build for games like Guild Wars 2?

Hi guys, I know I normally try and dish out advice myself but I tend to only input into things I've had experience in; budget AMD builds not being one of them.

My girlfriend has started to get into gaming a little bit and is beginning to see how easily one can become absorbed into a game. At the moment, she is really enjoying Guild Wars 2 but she can only play on my account and as she lives 90 miles up the motorway it is usually only at weekends when we don't really want to sit at a desk all day so she's only been playing it when I've been watching football, f1, etc. I'm looking for the cheapest build possible that can run the majority of MMO's and silly indie games, etc. I highly doubt she's ever going to want to play proper AAA titles.

I've had a quick play on the configurator and I'm still a bit confused by the variety of AMD processors. I assume because GW2 can pretty much play off Intel HD 3000 graphics that I'd be better off with one of the CPU's with built in graphics as a dedicated GPU would naturally be more expensive? Can anybody come up with any ideas or suggestions for the cheapest build possible? I'd love to have something for around £400 if I can. I am considering building it myself as I missed out on building my own but I would consider buying it from PCS if the price was right and either way having a headstart on what I should be looking for would be great. Alternatively, if anybody knows of any decent parts to look out for that PCS may not have in their range I would appreciate the input as I know there's plenty of obscure processors out there.

Oh and does anybody have experience of playing GW2 on a bog standard laptop? I.e. like a i3, 6gb ram and integrated graphics? I know you'd need a separate mouse but how would the actual gameplay and temperatures be? Would it be too much stress?

Thanks :)

hey, have you considered a laptop? maybe the inferno would be a good option? maybe a bit more than 400 though.

if you wanted to self build, then i'll give you a hand over steam so i dont post links over PCS.

I think I can help you with this part. I currently play GW2 on a dog of a laptop, purchased circa 2010. It has and old i5 and low end mobility Radeon. I can play it at 1366x768 with everything low, but it heats up the temp somewhat. This isn't really a problem apart from the hardware down clocks when the laptop gets hot. After I bought a cooling stand then I no longer have this problem.

I am currently looking at a new laptop, Enigma IV, to run GW2 better. If you look at the information here; http://www.notebookcheck.net/Guild-Wars-2-Benchmarked.81604.0.html you will see that Intel HD 3000 barely runs the game on the highest performance setting. For that reason I would recommend a dedicated card if you are playing on notebook. Something like a HD 7670M or GT 630M would allow you to play on Medium settings pretty well. Also bare in mind that GW is bound by the CPU, so I could look for an entry level quad core i7 or a decend dual core i5. Have a play with the Enigma IV in PCS' laptop section and you might be suprised.

As far as desktops go, if you are looking at budget then go AMD/ATi. At the lower end you get better performance for your money from what I understand. Also Tom's Hardwars 'Best xxx for the money' articles are excellent (swap xxx with CPU, GPU, RAM etc.) in giving you the best components for your budget. Google it and check it out.

Hope that helps.

I have not played Guild Wars 2 specifically on my laptop, but played SWTOR which I don't imagine is any easier to run than Guild Wars 2 and I have a pretty basic 1 GB 6650 Radeon HD card on that and an AMD processor, can't remember exactly which one but its 2 years old now. On a different laptop atm so can't check that :p

Had a little mess about on a build. This one would cost closer to £500 but would give you a better GPU that could run GW2 easily.

Cheers Smoke, looks like the general consensus on those links is it depends on your version of integrated graphics and also most people say they struggle to get over 15fps. I suppose I'd have to look into it further.

And I'd considered a laptop purely so that she could perhaps bring it to mine but to be honest she gets the train so I doubt she'd want to lump that along with her as well. She already brings a suitcase full of clothes even just for a weekend... Only thing I worry about with a desktop is she has quite a dusty house and she has 3 dogs who tend not to go into her room so I don't know how regularly she'd be having to clean it out.

And thanks for the offer Tom, I'd love to self build just as a little project and to gain some experience so I'll give you a shout next time I'm online at home :) Obviously I don't mind screwing up a £400 build compared to a £1000 one!

If you want a box standard one that can run the game on minimum specs then you can get away with that for around £400. If you want one that will probably last a bit longer in terms of supporting games and be able to run current games on medium specs then you will have to up the budget to £500 maybe £600 for a pretty good AMD solution

I did that and it wasn't as complicated as I though.
