Mothboards

Evening all.

Could someone chime in on the comparison between an m5a 78l micro atx board and the m5a79 mobo for an AMD spec. The former is rated as SATA 3gb/sec and the latter 6. What's the pracitical effect of this? When is my pc actively handling this amount of data transfer? Is this likely to bottleneck the performance of a single gpu (7950) setup for gaming?

My brother has elected to go for a 4170 processor, caviar black setup, with the plan of adding an ssd around Christmas. My limited understanding of micro atx boards is that they have less room for expansion slots, however having played with the configurator i didnt think i'd be too limited in adding a boot drive down the line - am I right in saying that?

Cheers

BD

EDIT: we're just going to have to stick with my misspelled title as I can't edit it - doh :(

What build are you looking at Black? My missus wants a cheap PC since I kind of got her a little bit addicted to GW2... (she finally actually played it after creating a character and genuinely enjoys it to the point that I was able to get in a lot of Fifa games this weekend while she was occupied!). She really doesn't want to spend much though and the cheapest I can come up with that looks reasonable is £600ish :\

Well the lower spec board can only cope with 3 moths, but the higher spec board can handle 6 moths.

Which board you decide to get is going to be decided by a combination of (A) how fast the moths are eating your clothes and (B) how regularly you replace your clothes anyway.

The moths have been repelled through a novel blend of physics and Bioshock inspired psychic cruelty that I have named Quantum Ultraviolence. Further inquiries into my moth eaten clothes will be met with extreme prejudice. :)

Mr. Grimez I had a budget of about 800 quid to build my brother a gaming pc, with only a modicum of flexibility price wise. The 660ti/7950 are at the same price right now, though for my money I'd have the nvidia at base clock speeds for a variety of reasons (one of which is the time it takes the 660 ti to render framerates, which is consistently better than AMD's offering, even though fps rates are pretty similar.) I'd pair this with an fx 6300 for power use and the fact that I like it better than the 4170/4300 - that was my processor debate (the i5 was a bit much of a push for my budget, once we took care of peripherals.) Other than that its pretty much the same spec we have.

Being the contrary so and so my brother is he elected to go for a partisan pc, 4170 and a 7950, but of this im actually kind of glad as ill be able to see how the AMD machine handles the same games I play with the exact same setup in all but CPU and GPU.

If 600 quid is your budget consider building your own, individual parts retailers have stuff at more price intervals than a manufacturer like PCS is ever gona pick up, so there is a bit more flexability for your budget and you can look at things like the i5 3350 and obviously branded graphics cards (for 600 7850/70 would go really nicely with the aforementioned intel processor.) Plus you get all the fun of sticking it together. Alternatively just bombard PCS with custom parts and get em to gift wrap it.

Aha thanks for the advice, I figured I'd stick it together myself anyway as I didn't want to do it with mine but it'd be a nice little project on a cheaper build!

I like it! Have you trade marked that name yet? If not, I would jump to it! You could even trade your moth balls under the name "Q Ultra-V" for a more "snappy" feel.

This could be BIG
