Motherboard choice and tweaks?

Hi,

Building a pc for work / gaming - It's been well over a decade since I last built anything, and that was a xeon server. I'm looking to build a high as can be machine for a varying set of uses - from AI / ML , 3D and video editing, VR and some gaming / gaming dev.

Budget isn't a concern, so would like to make it the best I can. I've put together the spec below, but unsure on what goes together well, and also the motherboards being ASUS - there didn't seem to be any option for MSI or others and I don't really know much about them these days.

I would love any recommendations on how to improve it - though I do like the case :D

Thank you in advance.

I know you said budget isn't a concern but we still need to know a ceiling

What proportion of the machine's time will be used for gaming vs the productivity side? If gaming is less than 50%, I'd probably go for the non-x3D chip...productivity things work better without the 3D chiplets.

Other notes:

Motherboard: I don't believe the ProArt board, as good as it is, offers anything for your uses that warranty the extra £200+ but I am not an expert on that board so I could be wrong;

GPU: Would normally recomment the normal 4090 but the Asus is cheaper.

Thermal paste: Not needed. The Corsair's come with high-end paste pre-alpplied at the factory

Thanks for the reply and advice.

Budget wise 4-5k inc vat is fine,I currently use a macbook pro which cost similar a few years ago, but looking to move back to windows / linux.

Usage - it's likely half and half - I run a dev / creative consultancy so during the day I build all manner of projects, at night I like to game to unwind - however my old pc is now so old most things won't run - so will lean towards that as it helps with the stress.

Will get the paste back to normal. I was thinking one of the 670e normal boards, but at a loss to which one.

I would strongly recommend holding out for both the 9000 X3D parts and the X870e motherboards which have USB4 across the board. You’ve got a comfortable budget and that will future proof you for a long time to come on the board and cpu side

Thanks! I think thats what i needed to hear. Im not in a massive rush, more that i’ve got out the game for so long it all seems completely alien and i no longer know whats going on in hardware. Will have a rwad up.

Thanks again

The CPU that would be a good option for your uses will hopefully be the 9950X3D which is one 8 core X3D chip, basically the same as the 9800X3D and then a second 8 core standard chip which is basically the same as the 9700X

Games hugely benefit from the X3D part which has massive cache, and then the full 16 cores can be utilised for productivity, and they're full fat cores rather than Intel's big / little design where actually only 8 cores are full fat.

The bonus (we're expecting) from the 9000 series X3D chips is that the 5000 and 7000 X3D chips were limited in frequency, it had to be rolled back quite heavily as they suffered from overheating otherwise. Apparently that's been solved with this generation, so IF rumours are true and it will be unlocked frequencies on these chips, having full frequency PLUS the added 3DVCache, that's going to be a seriously beasty chip.

The 9000 series so far have been a little lacklustre, they're very efficient, but there hasn't been much performance gain over the 7000 series. I'm hopeful that the X3D parts will shine though.

PCS are both a board partner and CPU partner, so they'll have stocks as soon as they're available.

The expectations are sometime this month for both the boards and the X3D chips, although previously we were expecting the X3D cpu's not until January, there's nothing confirmed as yet.

That would just kill any competition and make the 9950x3D really viable as an extreme gaming CPU as well as a monster all core! Please god let this be true!

It will still depend on the scheduling as you won't want to have processes going across CCDs. Would be amazing though.

I’m wondering if the recent optimisations in 24/H2 may be more in preparation for these chips and the benefits found on others was simply a bonus
