Hi guys hope your all well.

I was planning on getting a PC from PCS and still do but the motherboard that i wanted to have in my PC (Z87 PRO) has now been discontinued. I wanted this motherboard because of the built in WiFi in it.

But now its discontinued i don't know what motherboard to have because i don't really understand them very well and which one is good or not.

I was hoping could you guys help me out with some advice please?

I will be gaming and doing uni work on it but its mainly for gaming if that helps.

Here's the latest motherboards that they have;

  • ASUS® Z87M-PLUS
  • ASUS® Z87-K
  • ASUS® Z87-A
  • ASUS® SABERTOOTH Z78
  • ASUS® MAXIMUS VI GENE
  • ASUS® MAXIMUS VI HERO

Thanks

Do you have the rest of the spec nailed down yet?

If so post it because that would help too. Although the main question is, are you planning to run SLI or Xfire at any stage? Even the budget boards have enough SATA ports to upgrade as many HDD's as you want so running 2 GPU's Is often the deciding factor. What about overclocking?

I would probably opt for the Z87-A

Thanks for the reply. Heres my other thread with my specs if that helps.

Thanks. I don't think i will be adding two gpus anytime soon. but i wouldn't say its not an option.

Any of the motherboards you posted will be fine apart from the micro ATX board (ASUS® Z87M-PLUS) since it has less expansion slots than the others. I would go with the Z87-A if you are planning to SLI (add a 2nd NVidia GPU) or Z87-K if you don't plan to SLI.

From the spec posted in the other thread if you do ever plan to upgrade to dual 780's it might be worth upgrading the PSU now. It's not make or break but if your on the fence it's worth considering so it saves the bother later. For the extra £10 it is worth the upgrade to the Z87-A even if your not sure because that is a pain in the ass to change out later for an extra £10 investment now.

Other than that I just echo what Keynes said.

Im going to use the Z87-A now but what about my PSU? If i want to SLI or overclock what PSU do you recommend? 750W or 850W?

I suppose i would not need to overclock my gpu yet?

You will void your warranty if you do it. If you are unsure on how to overclock your CPU you could get a ore-overclocked system from PCS to avoid instability issues and it will be covered by your warranty.

Overclocking a GTX 780 probably wont be needed yet for single screen gaming, however in the future it is something you can use to get free performance. Just look at what others are getting on the same card and start off slowly. Overclocking the GPU is easy these days because most of the utilities for it just use sliders to control the various options.

Oh ok I see. I don't think I will be over clocking anytime soon.
