My laptop no longer charges!

Hi Guys,

Since yesterday morning my laptop has suddenly decided not to charge from the mains anymore. It was charging just fine on Friday evening. When plugged in, the battery just runs down. It doesn't even recognize it is plugged in.

There appears to be nothing wrong with the 180W power adaptor and cable - the green light is on when the adaptor is plugged in. I have checked the adaptor, cable and laptop for any signs of physical damage but can't see anything wrong.

Anyway, this is apparently a common problem with Windows 10 laptops according to Google. I followed Google recommended resolution and uninstalled the battery drivers, powered off, and removed and reset the battery, but this did not fix the problem.

What should I do, do you think? Thanks for your thoughts!

Here are my key specs (laptop purchased Sept 2015 and is out of warranty):

Does the laptop run ok with the battery out and the mains charger plugged in?

If you put the battery in, shutdown the laptop, plug in the mains charger, and leave it for a minimum of 24 hours on charge (without using it at all during this period), how long will it then run on battery?

Thanks again, guys. I've now determined what the problem is (or better said, my father has): the central connector pin in the power input socket has snapped off. I did not notice this. We can see that this socket is tightly soldered to the motherboard, so I fear I am looking at a new motherboard!

So would I be right to say the power isn't getting to the laptop at all? Rather than just not charging, it's not powering at all? This would have quickly pointed out either the AC supply or the DC input port (As you have found). Not charging points to either the battery or the charging circuit, which would be a separate issue.

Is the connector itself actually fused onto the board? That's quite unusual. Do you have any pictures of it? It's usually possible to purchase the input connectors, some are soldered onto boards but generally it's a power board rather than the motherboard itself as that would limit the manufacturers usage.

You could get it repaired no matter what style it is but it may end up costing more in the long run than a motherboard replacement would. If you check with PCS you may get a quote for a replacement if the board is available.

Hi, thanks, yeah the connector is fused onto the board. I queried a local laptop repair specialist but he won't touch it, says it's too high risk. So am waiting to see what PCSpecialist will say.
