My New PC

This morning I received my new computer. Fairly surprised that the DHL man knocked on the door so early (around 11) as usually I am waiting till the end of the evening for deliveries.

So, my thoughts so far.

The first thing I did when I got my machine was to open it it. The plan was to install my DVD writer and 2 extra HDD. One for the OS and the other to raid with the 1TB drive I bought.

The first problem was getting the DVD Drive in. Unfortunately the cables from the front USB ports were cutting right across the drive bays. Moving these out of the way meant that I have been able to get one of my drives installed however, there is no way I can get the second DVD Burner in without removing the cables.

The only space I could get the drive in was blocked with a cable tie, so after cutting that, the drive was added.

Next for the extra HDD. The first thing I noticed here was that the one drive that was already in the machine did seem to be put in fairly shoddily. The bay was bent as it looked like this had been forced in. So, removing the other side panel, I was able to remove the drive and reattach it much more securely. This appeared to be the only issue.

So, 2 new HDD and a DVD Drive added, time to boot up and set up Raid.

Unfortunately I don't know much about setting up raid, so this bit has been a little tricky. After rearranging the SATA ports, I was finally able to get the correct drives set as raid. The problem now is configuring them. When I boot, a message advises pressing CTRL+F to enter Raid Config however, pressing this just reboots the machine.

Eager to get the machine up and running, I have instead just installed Windows 7.

Now is time to set up and play.

So far, despite the 1 or 2 tiny installation niggles and my personal lack of raid knowledge, I am enjoying the initial playing :)

Just hope my manager doesn't see this post as he'll know I'm not working :D

I have now had a few hours with my new machine and so far I couldn't be happier.

Having installe the Raid Drivers, I now have my 2 1TB drives set to Raid1. I also have a 300GB drive set up for OS and installations.

Getting used to 64 bit OS as I've only used 32 bit previously. Just need to remember to download the right version of things and I'll be good :)

Machine is whisper quiet. Still copying across all of my files from backup and once this is finished I can carry on reinstalling everything.

Looking forward to many years if enjoyment from this machine.

Thank you PCS
