Network card problem

Ok, so i've been having quite a lot of problems with my network card, first it hardly worked, usually running at 0-2mbps, that randomly sorted itself out now runs at 8mbps (i'm paying for 10 so that seems ok). Now i've noticed that whenever i'm playing a game, regardless of whether it's an online game or not, my internet slows down a lot. I can't even load web pages while a game is open, it also sometimes has an impact on the game causing lag if it's online. Not sure whether it could be my network card or just some settings (it's only on this PC that the internet is slow for when games are open so it rules out modem/ broadband problems).

Oh and the internet goes straight back to normal once the game is closed.

It's possible that you have a low amount of RAM, the game is taking up a lot of memory and your computer finds it difficult to do anything whilst running the game. I used to have this problem with my laptop, if I was running a game in the background my computer ran very slowly when I tried to access a browser or something. So it doesn't sound like it's the network card that is the problem.

It does it with minecraft though, i have 8gb of RAM. Thanks for the reply btw :)

should probably have included the PC specs in the question.

Hmm, I'm not sure then, sorry! :(

I can tell you that when I had this issue with my laptop the game did not take up anywhere near the maximum RAM, and it was still very slow. It seemed to magically sort itself out though, not sure how.

Have you made sure all your drivers are up to date ? and is this issue on a new pc from PCS? And what browser are you using? I find that internet explorer can often take a long time to load up (on my laptop I can't load it at all, it just crashes the system)

The drivers on the edimax 7612pin website don't work with win7, I've been told PCS do drivers, is there a download center I could get them from?

Yeah, had it for about a month, gonna search for some drivers now. Maybe it will randomly sort out, as the speed did.

Installed the drivers given with the computer just then, it seemed to make the internet slower but at least it doesn't matter whether i'm in game or not, it's just slow overall. This could mean it's more of a driver problem then I suppose.

They will be old drivers i believe. On your account page there should be a link for downloads :)

Seems to be quite a bit faster after the drivers, still slow while running games, not sure why. Anyway thanks for the help! :D

Im not a fan of the £16 PCI network cards from PCS. Many have reported that they have had problems with them (including myself). I suffered a severe range issue, even though my old desktop's card worked fine. You could look into some homeplugs if it's too bad. Or you could get a long ethernet cable, or move the router closer to yourself. (People will rag me for suggesting homeplugs haha)

Homeplugs are indeed good, but it doesn't sound like the network card is the problem here. I mean, if the issue is that the computer is being slow whilst running a game then its not the network card.

Grumble, is it only internet browsers that are slow when you're running a game, or does it affect everything?

Thought a wired connection would increase it's reliability when gaming too :p
I agree, it does sound like something is interfering with the network card when you go on games.. Can't think for the life of me what it would be though.. One wild guess would be that your router can't push the signal to your pc quickly enough when in games..? Still doesn't explain offline games etc.

What was the range problem that you had? Since I'm getting my pc delivered in a couple days time. My router will be about 5m (maybe a bit more) from my pc and I've got a PCI card.

Didn't see you'd replied, sorry.

Erm, just kept saying 'no internet access', 2 bar connection where my old desktop got 4. My router is across the landing, about 5m away. May have just been mine, don't worry :)

I hope it is just yours and that mine doesn't have a problem. Like yours, my router is across the landing.
