New build! GTX 980Ti going in here - thoughts?

Hi all,

I just ordered my first PC Specialist build.

I'm replacing everything from my old build except an SSD, HDD and the GPU (Windforce GTX 980Ti).

2 questions:
- What do you think of my current GTX 980Ti going in this build?
- Will it be easy to move the OS (Windows 10) from the HDD I've ordered with the build, to my SSD that I already own and currently has Windows 7 and some other programs on it?

Not easy to "move" it as such, but it will be very easy to install the drives into the new PC, format them and just do a clean install of Windows 10 onto your existing SSD.

What's your budget / what's the exact full spec and price that the above came to? And what's your budget.

You can amend orders after placing them, and there are a lot of tweaks that spring to mind like faster RAM, either a better or a cheaper CPU cooler (H60 isn't good value really), possibly a cheaper motherboard, dropping the sound card, going for the -k CPU etc

Thanks for your reply Oussebon.
I have already ordered it but might end up cancelling and reordering so will take your suggestions onboard.
Budget is approx. £1200-1300
- Is the standard soundcard good enough?
- I have my own Corsair HX850i PSU and was either planning to sell this, or sell the one that comes with the build and replace with that.
- Motherboard-wise I didn't really have any idea, wanted to go for a future-proof one
- As I understood, faster RAM doesn't have that much of an impact on gaming performance? I'll be gaming at 1080p for now but may upgrade to 4k later
- I wont be overclocking so don't think the -k would be very useful for me
- I may ask PCS to give me the OS as a key/CD so I can install it on my SSD myself

Thanks in advance for your answers/advice

The on board sound is perfect. It took me some convincing at first too.
I would keep the HX as IIRC it is fully modular and better quality than the Tx. You will have to add the mobo power yourself as the TX has those power connectors built in.
RAM can make improvements and it is usually one of the more cost effective ones.

Thanks Jerpers, I've gone for standard sound card in my revised build.
Now for follow up questions (sorry):
- What do you mean by add the mobo power myself?
- Will it be fairly easy to change out the PSU and secure this into the case? I have 0 confidence in my cable management
- Should I get PCS to partition my 5TB hard drive? What are the advantages/disadvantages of this?
- Is there any way to save the files/folders from my Windows 7 OS I'm on currently and port these into the new PC on Windows 10?
- Thanks, I'll definitely keep the HX PSU in that case. What PSU do you think I should go for in the build that I'll then sell?
- As sort of a follow-up how much W will these components + the GTX 980Ti, a SATA HDD and a SSD require?
- Do the USB port options seem sufficient?

REVISED BUILD:

Could a mod please delete this thread? I've updated in a new thread

It's best to stick to one thread because then people know whats already been suggested so I've merged your threads back together again :)

- I wont be overclocking so don't think the -k would be very useful for me
The -k means it has an unlocked multiplier for overclocking, so yes, that's not useful to you - but, the i7 8700k is actually faster out of the box without any overclock too. That said, it's not much faster so you may prefer to save the cash.

- As I understood, faster RAM doesn't have that much of an impact on gaming performance? I'll be gaming at 1080p for now but may upgrade to 4k later
That's true in many cases. But in the cases where it's not true, you really want the faster RAM:

In view of the proportionately small price difference, I think it's always worth going for the 3000MHz RAM over the 2133MHz RAM.

The TUF is a good choice for the motherboard in my opinion. Gives USB 3.1 Gen 2 without charging an arm and a leg for features you don't need or want.

- I may ask PCS to give me the OS as a key/CD so I can install it on my SSD myself
The Windows 10 key that comes with the system will actually be saved on the motherboard. You won't need to enter a key when reinstalling onto your SSD.

- What do you mean by add the mobo power myself?
The PSU it will come with is not modular and will have power cables running to the motherboard at the side and the top. You will need to use the modular cables from your HX PSU to run power from the PSU to the same place.
- Will it be fairly easy to change out the PSU and secure this into the case? I have 0 confidence in my cable management
It is relatively straight forward. Just take lots of pictures when you remove one and carefully put your other one in, in the same way running cables down the same routes.
- Thanks, I'll definitely keep the HX PSU in that case. What PSU do you think I should go for in the build that I'll then sell?
The minimum wattage one you can get away with.
- As sort of a follow-up how much W will these components + the GTX 980Ti, a SATA HDD and a SSD require?
Probably around 650w.
- Do the USB port options seem sufficient?
I find it is plenty.
