new build questions

Hi, I missed out on the Vulcan pro (too long dithering) so I'm looking at making my own, similar build. Before I post that, I have a few questions:

1) To get USB 3.1 ports do I need to select BOTH a case listed as having USB3.1 and select the correct option in the USB Options section of the Systems refinement? Or is it enough to select in USB options and they'll replace the usual USB 3.0 ones in the case?

2) If I buy a standard 8700K with a plan to overclock it later (probably modestly, not looking to get 5GHz), what are my minimum cooling requirements - would a dragonfly heatpipe be enough when I overclock it?

3) While I love the PCs on this site, the monitors don't seem to be such a good range - I'm struggling to find a 1440p, 144Hz monitor with G-Sync - any pointers?

4) I'm not going for No2 build or anything silly - are there any bad options for me with the Z370 motherboards (I'm thinking mostly of being able to upgrade parts in the future) or will any do?

5) I see that some configurators have higher speed RAM options than others - can RAM be too fast for some motherboards?

Thanks for reading!

Hello, it is a shame you missed out on that one as it was a great deal.
1) For USB 3.1, most motherboards now have it at the back. If you want a front port, yes you would need a case that supports it.
2) Your overclock capabilities will depend on the cooler; the better the cooler, the more stable your clock. Although the dragon fly is ok, I would go for at least the Noctua plus the upgraded thermal paste.
3) I am limited to a 24" monitor so have the acer predator xb241yu. It is very good, I am sure the bigger screens are just as good.
4) Any of the motherboards should be ok as long as they meet your USB requirements.
5) I believe PCS have not been able to get the full speed out of the RAM in some configurations, it can vary between chipset and motherboard.

+1 to all the above.

For mobo recommendations, the Asus TUF has USB 3.1 Gen 2 Types A and C, and is the least expensive one that does.

Motherboards like the Ultra Gaming have additional features like SLI.. but in all honesty, SLI is not likely to be useful to you. So I'd go with the TUF (which is incidentally what the Vulcan Pro had anyway).

The Dell S2716DG (I think) is a popular recommendation on the forums for a monitor with those specs.

About the RAM .. In addition to what Jerpers said, some configurators offer 3600MHz DDR4 with the same mobos as other configurators only offer 3200MHz. But given that 3600MHz RAM is maybe ~£50 more than 3200MHz, it doesn't really seem worth it anyway. 3000MHz / 3200MHz seems more than fine for a luxury gaming build.
