New Computer AMD or Intel

Hi Folks,

I am looking to get a new computer this year, now before anyone asks no nothing is wrong with my mini beast of a computer but as I have said previously it has been up for sale for a while and well I have found a buyer and with my new job I'm going to be upgrading to a more powerful computer. I am easy as to which side of the fence I go whether it be Intel or AMD but I am thinking Intel this time round :).

My budget is about £3000, this will include 3 monitors, keyboard & mouse. As I have sold my full setup. Bit of a clearout as you would say! I have spec'd two computers. Yes they are a little overkill but I don't think there's anything wrong with that!

I know both systems are a bit overkill for gaming, but it shall be future proof for a while as well as being able to use photoshop and do some video editing/uploading as well. :) Any suggestions welcome.

The motherboard on the intel spec is overkill and the i7-3770 will perform better than the i7-3820. For your budget I would consider sli gtx 680 4gb since you are running 3 screens and upgrade the warranty.

The 4gb version should perform slightly better with 3 screens. If you are planning to run 3 screens you are better off with 2 x gtx 680 4gb.

Would the copper heatpipe be enough to keep the computer cool? As the cooler I have now literally keeps my computer really cool but is super quiet also.

When are you planning on buying? Because, later this year Intel are going to be bringing out New haswell cpu's and ivy bridge extreme, as well as the possibility of new nvidia cards.

dont bother getting 680's get two 7970's ghz edition cheaper and better. Nvidia are really taking the **** tbh. They charge your insane amounts for there latest graphics cards. Titan is a bad graphics card, pay more than a 690 so around £950 pounds and get less performance.

Power of a single 7970 ghz edition playing crysis on 3 screens pretty much maxed out without OC. Really powerful and if you get two you can play every games on maxes even for a few years to come.

Get the i7 3770k so you get better fps.

Or you could wait for the new Amd Graphics Cards

The I7 3770k wont give you better FPS over the I5 3550k at all. One of the only differences between the two is, the I7 offers hyper-threading which isn't used in gaming at all, and a slight increase in clock speed.

The only way you would see minor improvements, would be if you overclocked your I7 or I5. But this would only benefit some CPU heavy games, not the majority of games.

You could just overclock the i5 3550 K, instead of spending 100 quid more on a I7.

But stock speeds are more than enough for games,

When I read it, i thought he was meaning the 3770k gave better fps than a 3770 which was even more of a head scratcher for me...

Now that you gamers have had your say, recall that the OP also does Photshop and video editing. For that he will want a good 4 core processor such as the i7 3770K but where the GPU pales into insignificance.

I would also comment on the use of a 4Gb drive (will probably need partitioning anyway) when, say, 2 x 2Gb drives would give better disc access with less thrashing per drive.

However an external 4Gb USB drive could be considered for backup - if the OP values his data or wants to recover his OS in case of disaster.

We weren't saying for him not to get an i7. We were questioning someone's comment of saying that an i7 will give him more fps.

And I assume you mean Tb and not Gb? :p

An i7 will give you a few more fps over i5 because of the base over clock. Watch the vid it shows you unclocked and overclocked and there is clearly a difference.

It definitely isn't worth £100+ for 2-3 more fps. I can already max out games based on my GTX670.
