New desktop for ~£800

My current machine is as follows:

Dell XPS 720
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Processor
nvidia 8800GTX graphics card
4gb ram

I am guessing this is worthy of replacement rather than upgrade? If so - could you recomend a machine for about £800 (leaving £200 for a monitor which I can sort another time). It will be used for standard Office/Internet stuff + Photoshop / bit of video work. It won't be used for games.

Any help really appreciated.
Thanks.

If you mean £800 with a further £200 for a monitor you will get another time then something like:

The CPU and RAM should be very capable for photoshop, and photoshop can make use of a GPU to accelerate some functions (as can certain video editing programs) so I've included a basic one there. Photoshop is also supposed to benefit from an SSD, so I've put one in that. if you need more storage you can always add more later or rob the HDD from your old PC to supplement it.

Oussebon - Thanks very much for your response. It looks pretty much spot on. I would like to make a few changes which I am struggling to do with with configurator. I am not sure if you work for PCSpecialist or not but eitherway could I ask if you could make a few changes for me?

1. The case is a bit much - I would prefer to go for the inwin g7 black gaming case (or similar like the Corsair Carbide Series 200R Compact Gaming Case)
2. Add an internal memory card reader (to be able to read CF cards)
3. Add a 2 TB HDD as a second drive
4. Add WIFI as well as gigabit LAN.

I know the above will bump up the budget and that's fine. But it seems the case and the memory card made the setup incompatible. And with the HDD and network card I wasn't sure which of the options to go for.

Thanks again for your time.

Oussebon doesn't work for PCSpecialist (at least I don't think he does), the vast majority of the forum users don't including the mods.
It appears as if you can't actually add an internal memory card reader with the motherboard selected (even if you do find a case that'll accept it - a lot don't seem to anymore), and unfortunately that motherboard is the only option on that configurator, so just as a thought you may want to consider a USB memory card reader instead if possible - either that or a different configurator with different motherboard options will be required - which may push the price up (though I haven't checked), unless I'm missing something - which is quite possible :)

Edit: I've just noticed that you can pick an external card reader instead of an internal one, if you're happy with an external reader it's all perfectly fine and you can ignore the above ramblings :)

Thanks Rakk - I'd have probably wasted time in the configurator before noticing that :) I suppose it's due to the mobo having fewer internal USB headers than its ATX cousins.

An otherwise-matched build with an ATX Z270 mobo is £80 more expensive. So an external one is the way to go here I think. As an aside, many of the cases that do support card readers tend not to be ones I recommend for a variety of reasons.

I would say the Inwin G7 over the Carbide 200R. Stock cooling performance seems a touch better and it has a very basic fan controller (two speed switch) so you can make the fans spin slower and quieter if you're not doing anything heavy with the PC.

The HDD adds about £60 and the wifi card another £22, so it does push the price up somewhat.

I added an external card reader but you can source one yourself from wherever you want if there's an alternative design or model you'd rather have (the PCS external card reader doesn't say if it's USB 2 or USB 3).

Thanks very much Oussebon (and also Rakk) - that looks great - and fine that I go external memory card reader. I will go ahead and purchase that. I think PCS should give you some commission! Your effort is much appreciated as I can get lost in the technical minefield!
Many thanks again and have a good 2017!
