New Nova purchase

Hi All,

Hope you are all staying safe in these unprecedented times.

I’ve decided now is as good a time as any to purchase a new gaming laptop and from the (admittedly not particularly in depth) research I did it seemed the new Nova with Ryzen CPUs were a solid option.

I’ve gone ahead and purchased a recommended spec by someone on these forums but I think I played around with the storage without then going back and changing.

My full specs are below & it would be really useful to hear whether I should give PCS a call on Tuesday (after the bank holiday) and ask if they can amend the storage (or anything else you feel is out of kilter), or whether it is fine as is.

What storage apart from the SATA SSD, your full spec did not come out. My option would be a very quick PCIe NVMe m2 for the OS and main software then another drive for storage and depending on your needs a decent 7200rpm HDD would do.

What @Stephen M is saying is that if that's your only selected storage device, that's very slow by today's standards.

You'd normally have an M2 drive as a primary drive for OS and games and then an HDD as a secondary storage drive

The CPU in the Nova is actually a desktop CPU, a 3rd gen Ryzen.

The AMD CPU's that we're eagerly awaiting are the 4th gen Ryzen which are their laptop CPU's.

Intel have been dominant in the laptop space for a long time now to the point it wasn't worth buying an AMD laptop. BUT Intel chips are nowadays almost impossible to cool effectively in a laptop, they require serious cooling just to run normally, they're pretty awful generally and almost always lead to thermal throttling.

The new AMD chips smash intel in performance whist running on HALF the power, so they can be effectively cooled and run at optimal performance as they should do, plus battery life will be significantly improved. It's going to transform the laptop market going forwards.

The 3600 is brilliant for gaming.
But that’s not a laptop, it’s a desktop replacement so has very poor battery life and weighs a tonne, it’s not designed to be carried around, it’s for smaller form factor on a desk at home.

So long as you understand that, it’s still brilliant for gaming.

guys, here is a video of new clevo NH57ADS (NOVA) with AMD 3900X/3950X with 16 cores. I think its 65W TDP
is a graphic card BGA? what do you think about tripod mounting?

Interesting video, thanks for posting. The liquid nitrogen stuff looked great fun to try, not sure I will bother though.
